"Three Views of Contemporary Big Band"

Christopher Braig will direct the phenomenal Fort Zumwalt West High School Jazz Band in a ‘head arrangement’ (i.e., no sheet music) of “All the Things You Are’’ based on their arrangement of an unaccompanied solo by Chris Potter. He then directs the eight musicians of the Webster University Mini Big Band in new arrangements by the musicians for “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Stolen Moments.”

The evening concludes with two new arrangements by current Webster University music students Paul Shanker (“Serenity”) and Keith Moyer (“Skylark”). Also featured will be “Life is Ever Changing” and “Sergio” by Kim Portnoy, director of the composition program, and “Green Piece” by New York composer Maria Schneider. Vocalist Hannah McDonald will join the band for the modern classic by Chick Corea “500 Miles High.”

Proceeds from this concert benefit the DONALD O. DAVIS MEMORIAL JAZZ SCHOLARSHP, which was established by Mr. Davis’ family and friends to honor his love of jazz and commitment to helping students pursue their dreams.

New Music Ensemble Spring Concert

The Webster University New Music Ensemble, under the direction of Duane Bridges, presents a spring concert. The New Music Ensemble is devoted to the performance of works by student, as well as established contemporary composers, the exploration of acoustic and electronic media and new approaches to group improvisation.

The concert will feature several student compositions and works by Morton Feldman and Charles Ives. In addition, the ensemble will premiere a new composition written collaboratively by the Ensemble for the Ensemble. It is inspired by the children’s book “Hi, Pizza Man,” by Virginia Walter.
