The Webster Gorloks women’s basketball squad opened the home portion of its schedule with a come from behind win over Central Methodist, 64-63 on Tuesday, November 20th at Grant Gym. Jacquelyn Wamser hit a driving lay-up with 0:07 remaining to give the Gorloks the victory.

WU trailed for most of the first half before going on a 9-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back threes by Wamser, which spanned nearly 4:30 to give the Gorloks their largest lead of the night at 28-22. Central Methodist would cut the lead to two but Wamser answered right back with her third trey of the half to extend the lead back to five. The Lady Eagles continued clawing back but a three pointer by Jenny Venegoni right before the half sent Webster into the locker room with a 37-33 advantage. The Gorloks were red hot from behind the arc connecting on 7-of-9 (78 percent) and finished the half shooting 50 percent (15-for-30) from the floor.

In the second half WU stretched its lead to five points on three different occasions but were unable to shake Central Methodist. The Lady Eagles stayed within striking distance and regained the lead 50-49 with 6:12 to go. CMU would stretch its lead to 59-54 before the Gorloks made a late charge pulling within a point with just over a minute remaining in the game. After a Lady Eagle lay-up extend the lead back to three, Venegoni hit a pair of free throws to cut it back to one and then stole the ball on Central Methodist’s ensuing possession to set-up the game’s final dramatics.

After its hot shooting in the opening frame the Gorloks cooled off a bit in the second stanza making only 9-of-22 shots (41 percent) and were 1-of-4 from the three-point line.

First-year students were well-represented in the game. Freshman point guard Michelle McQueen finished with 7 points, 10 assists, and 4 steals. Freshman forward Katy Meyer accumulated 9 points and 4 rebounds. Freshmen Wendy Dunn and Rachael Wamser also logged minutes and contributed to the victory.
