Nationally Recognized Human Rights Speaker Speaks September 15

The Multicultural Center and International Student Affairs kicks off another great semester with nationally known speaker Judy Shepard on Monday, September 15, at 7:00pm in the Loretto Hilton Center at Webster University. Judy Shepard lost her twenty-one-year-old son, Matthew, ten years ago to a murder motivated by anti-gay hate. Matthew's murder resulted in a public outcry that brought hate crimes to the forefront of national debate. Turning tragedy into a crusade for justice, Judy Shepard established The Matthew Shepard Foundation to help carry on Matthew’s legacy by educating and enlightening others on the importance of diversity, understanding, compassion, acceptance and respect.

Since Matthew’s death, Shepard has testified before the United States Senate in support of the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, has done significant work with the Human Rights Campaign, and spoken all over the country. As the 10th anniversary of Matthew’s death approaches, Judy Shepard will discuss what each of us can do to make our schools and communities safer for everyone, regardless of race, sex, religion, or sexual orientation.

This lecture is free and open to the Webster University community as well as the general public. The Multicultural Center and International Student Affairs is presenting this program as part of the Year of International Human Rights.
