Webster Athletics Coming Off a Great Year

As the new school year begins, the Webster athletic teams will benefit from the momentum of tremendous success in the 2007-2008 seasons.

Among the fall sports, volleyball and women’s soccer both won their conference championships last year. For soccer, it was the eighth title in nine years, while volleyball earned the distinction in two of the past three seasons. Both Luigi Scire and Merry Graf, head coaches of women’s soccer and volleyball, respectively, brought home conference Coach of the Year honors.

Both programs are in great position to defend their championships, and Marty Todt and his men’s soccer team will be working to climb back to the top of the heap with an influx of new talent after a fifth-place finish last year.

Last winter saw more championships for Webster, as the men’s basketball team captured its second straight regular-season title. Despite graduating three all-conference players, head coach Chris Bunch brought in a strong recruiting class and will contend well again this season. The women’s team, under Jayme Callahan, nearly doubled its win total from 2006-2007, tallying 11 victories, and should climb higher this year.

The spring provided even more fireworks from the Gorloks, highlighted by the baseball team’s best-ever finish. The team advanced to within six outs of the NCAA Div. III World Series and set numerous school records in the process. Head coach Bill Kurich will have many of his key players returning and several outstanding newcomers, making the baseball team a powerhouse once again in the upcoming year.

The softball team tied for the conference crown under interim coach Merry Graf, and new head coach Chris Eaton will inherit a veteran group dedicated to winning the conference outright this season.

The department is also energized by new teams in 2008-2009. Men’s and women’s cross country will represent Webster for the first time this fall. In the spring, men’s and women’s track and field will debut as well. Both programs are headed by head coach Dusty Lopez and will be striving to continue the department’s history of excellence in both athletics and academics.
