September Sports Update
Dusty Lopez, Athletics

The Webster athletic department has enjoyed a fine start to the 2008-2009 year. Women’s soccer won eight of its first 10 games and traveled to California for a weekend for two games against strong West Coast teams. The program, under coach Luigi Scire, recently celebrated two milestones. First, the team marked its 10-year anniversary by honoring alumnae at the home opener against Elmhurst. Then with a win on September 20 against Blackburn, the Gorloks marked their 150th victory.

Volleyball also started 8-2 and looked very strong against conference opponents, going undefeated against their first four SLIAC foes. Men’s soccer sported a record of only 2-4-1, but all four of their losses had been by just one goal, including one that came in double overtime.

The cross country team competed well in its first three meets. This season is the first time in Webster history that men have run for the Gorloks. Derrick McKee has quickly established himself as one of the best runners in the conference.

Men’s golf also provided a nice highlight for the department by defending their title as champions of the Gorlok Fall Invitational golf tournament and will look to build on their success in the spring season.

Finally, the athletic teams and staff are all looking forward to October 1, when the entire department participates in community service programs throughout the St. Louis area as part of the annual Webster Works Worldwide day.
