Renita and Obama: Reflections from a Webster Parent
Rene Murph, Department Associate, Multicultural Center and International Student Affairs

I've worked at Webster University for the last eighteen years. The last 16 have been spent in the Multicultural Center and International Student Affairs Office. My daughter, Renita, is a senior at Webster and will be graduating this May.

This year will be especially memorable for me. For one reason, I’m so proud that Renita has stayed the course and is finishing her degree in Psychology. She has gained work experience by doing work study in the Human Resource Office and gained practical experience in her field by helping me with my many foster children over the years, many who had a behavior disorder or severe emotional disturbance. My daughter has always been one to aid others in their time of distress. This degree is suitable for her interests and her personality and I am extremely proud of her. We are really going to celebrate in May.

Another reason this year is so memorable for me is because I witnessed history in Washington, DC on January 20, 2009. I was in the Mall in Washington, DC with over a million individuals, watching a jumbotron while Barack Obama became the first African American president of the United States of America. I was there!

I communicated with Renita by cell phone until I could no longer get a call out. She was equally excited because she voted in the presidential election. Usually I have to remind her to make sure she goes to cast her vote, but this time was different. She was motivated, encouraged, and hopeful for the future.

When Renita graduates from Webster University on May 10, 2009, I’m sure that all of the emotions I am experiencing regarding her graduating and the Inauguration will stay not only with me and Renita for the rest of our lives, but for all the other students graduating this year and all of the proud parents of those students.

What a year!
