Commuter Council is here for you! Jennifer Violett, University Center and Student Activities and Chris Penberthy, Commuter Council The Webster University Commuter Council was established in 2008 to advocate for concerns specific to commuter students, the majority of our student population. Encouraging campus unity through partnerships with departments, student organizations, and on-campus residents, the Commuter Council strives to create the best possible college experience for Webster University students. It is our hope to engage and support our Commuter students by encouraging campus involvement and providing ease of access to campus resources. As a parent, having a first-year commuter student at home can be a challenge; we’ve included some tips for you to help you and your students make an easy transition: Eating on Campus: On-campus dining facilities are open to all students, not just residents. Commuters can pay cash, use a debit/credit card, or purchase Bonus Bucks. Bonus Bucks are the best deal because you earn a bonus based on what you pay (ex. $100 purchase earns a 10% bonus) and you won’t pay sales tax on bonus bucks purchases! Bonus Bucks can be purchased at the Dining Services office in Marletto’s Marketplace (ground floor of Loretto Hall). Between Classes: As a commuter you will inevitably need a place to hang-out between classes. Some commuter-friendly campus hang-outs are the University Center Commons or the MCISA Student Lounge (ground floor, Loretto Hall); if you’re looking for a quiet place to study you might try the Lantern Lounge (Sverdrup Business and Technology Complex) or the Emerson Library. Parking Permits: Parking permits are a must for commuters! It might be tempting to park on the street nearby, but the Webster Groves Police Department keeps a close watch on these areas. Parking permits can be purchased on a term, semester or yearly basis from the Business Office (1st floor Webster Hall). Be sure to give yourself enough time to park on campus and get to class on time. Parking is ample on campus, but at busy times you may not be able to find a spot that’s as close as you would like! Public Transportation: Arriving on campus via Metrobus/Metrolink is very simple. Webster University is between two Metrolink stations (Shrewsbury Station and Sunnen Station); from the Metrolink, connect to Metrobus #56. This bus stops on Lockwood Ave. right next to Webster Hall. Current students can purchase an unlimited semester Metrobus/Metrolink pass at the University Center Information Desk, all you need is your current student ID card! Get Involved: It is a fact that commuter students who are involved on campus feel a greater connection and have a more successful college career. Commuters can easily get involved in student organizations and other on-campus programs. Student Government Association (www.webster.edu/sga) and Campus Activities (www.webster.edu/campusactivities) are two great resources for campus information. The GO! Calendar (www.webster.edu/gorlokonline) lists all student-oriented programming on campus. Hopefully this will can help your student get started on the right track as a commuter.
