Expectations of New Students
Ted Hoef, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students

During New Student Orientation, I shared a list of our most important expectations and what we have found to be the keys to success. As I presented each one, an orientation leader shared a personal reflection to add a student perspective. For those that missed this presentation, here is our list of expectations and keys to success.

Expectations

  1. Go to class and show up on time.
  2. Follow the student code of conduct, on- and off-campus.
  3. Know your rights and responsibilities and what is expected of you. Read each syllabus carefully.
  4. Treat others with respect and dignity.
  5. Take responsibility for your own learning.
  6. Get involved and attend some campus events.
  7. Make a difference. Participate in WWW.
  8. Uphold academic honesty and maintain civil behavior in the classroom and around campus.
  9. Take full advantage of Webster’s diversity. Learn from others and seek out and appreciate differences.
  10. Be open to new experiences and ideas.
  11. Solve your own problems.
  12. Take advantage of the many international aspects of Webster.
  13. Use technology, but not to excess.
  14. Communicate your needs. Ask for help.
  15. Accept responsibility for your actions.

Keys to Success

  1. Participate in class and keep up with your assignments.
  2. Don’t try to be perfect. Be yourself.
  3. Manage your time wisely – treat it as a scarce resource.
  4. Create balance in your life. Get enough sleep. Take care of your health. Exercise.
  5. Get a job on campus.
  6. Get involved in a student organization.
  7. Be willing to change. Do some things outside your comfort zone.
  8. Expect to be challenged.
  9. Don’t rush it. Make memories. Treat college as a valuable experience, not a checklist.
  10. Get to know students, faculty, and staff outside of class.
  11. Learn about campus resources and take advantage of them early.
  12. Find a mentor. Get an internship.
  13. Use Career Services early and often. Handing you a degree at graduation does not hand you a job.
  14. Don’t lose sight of your main goal. Graduate.
  15. Have fun and enjoy the experience.
