Construction in Loretto Hall
Construction has begun on a section of Loretto Hall. The building is in the shape of a “T” and administrative offices already occupy the stem of the “T.” The top of the “T” contained residence hall rooms until two years ago. The interiors of this section of the building were demolished last year. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the space, this is the southern portion of the building that runs east and west. Pinnacle Contracting began mobilization on campus August 20. This project is planned in several phases of work and is anticipated to last through the first quarter of 2010.

This work will require some changes to the ways that students navigate Loretto Hall on a daily basis. The changes are outlined below:

  1. The main construction entrance will be through the east ground floor door (the one to the north of Mail and Copy). This entrance will not be accessible to students/staff/faculty for the duration of the project.
  2. The stair tower entrance on the north/east side of Loretto Hall and the colonnade entrance will continue to be open throughout construction.
  3. All Maria Hall entrances will remain open during construction.
  4. The gated lot will have various construction activities for the duration of the project. These activities will greatly affect the pedestrian path across the lot from parking on the south side of Big Bend. Anyone parking in lots J, K, & L should plan to cross Big Bend at the intersection and navigate around Maria to Loretto.
  5. There must not be any access through the corridor doors connecting the "Stem" and top of the "T" on the first, second, third, and fourth floor. Signs have been posted to serve as a reminder.

As construction progresses, there will likely be additional notifications or changes to building access that we must address. As these occurrences arise we will provide updates to the University community.

Excerpts from President’s Letter to University Community
Continuing in our first tier status, Webster has risen in the U.S News and World Report rankings to 24th. Further, U.S. News ranks our Study Abroad program in the top 34 across the nation, thus recognizing the high quality of our programs and putting us in the top 2% of all ranked institutions. Others ranked in our Study Abroad category include Columbia University, Dartmouth College, Duke University, Georgetown University, NYU, and Syracuse University.

We continue to attract a diverse and exceptional group of students. Many universities worried about this freshman class in light of the current national economic situation. We are pleased to report that our St. Louis new full-time freshmen class totals 474 students, an increase of 13% over last year. We have approximately 3,300 undergraduate students in St. Louis; our graduate programs in St. Louis bring us an additional 4,100 students for a total of 7,500 students studying in St. Louis this fall.

22 new full-time faculty have now joined us at the home campus, including five individuals in new positions. They join our highly qualified full-time faculty and valued working professionals who are committed first and foremost to our students’ learning and success.
