Athletic Update, September 1, 2009
Niel DeVasto, Sports Information

Fall sports are upon us as the Women’s Volleyball and Men and Women’s Soccer and Cross-Country teams prepare to open their seasons on September 1. In addition, Men’s Baseball, Men’s Golf, and Women’s Softball play abbreviated fall schedules as well, creating a whirlwind of activity on and off campus. Ninety-two new Gorlok student-athletes have enrolled for the fall semester, including 61 freshmen and 31 transfers.

Potential milestones and accomplishments will make this an exciting fall for sports. In men’s soccer, Coach Marty Todt’s first win this fall will be one to remember as he will have reached the coveted 200 victory plateau. Todt is the dean of the Webster University coaching staff as he begins his 22nd season.  With the most wins by a men’s soccer coach in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) history, Todt has compiled a 101-59-18 conference record and a 199-160-42 record overall.

Men’s Cross-Country will field a team made up of dedicated cross-country athletes for the first time in Webster athletic history. Coach Dusty Lopez has six freshmen on his nine-man roster. Women’s Volleyball looks for a “three-peat” as they try to win their third consecutive conference championship. Merry Graf’s squad has been picked to finish first in the SLIAC Conference pre-season poll. Women’s soccer will look to recapture the SLIAC Conference title they have won seven of the last nine years.
