Welcome to the seventh issue of the 2009-10 academic year for Staying Connected, a newsletter for parents of first-year students.

Registration for Fall
First-year students can begin registering for Fall Semester classes on April 7. All undergraduate registration requires advisor approval. Students must make appointments to discuss their schedule with their advisor well in advance of this very busy time period. All outstanding judicial and financial issues must also be resolved prior to registration.

Student Leaders
I am happy to announce that we have hired eight students from this year’s class of first-year students to serve as Resident Assistants (RAs) next year. This list includes:

  • Anthony Burgeson, from St. Louis
  • Tegan Bouchard, from St. Louis
  • Christopher Robinson, from St. Louis
  • Taylor Roberson, from St. Louis
  • Joaquin Groves, form Honduras
  • Jesica Russell, from St. Louis
  • Daniel Henkey, from St. Louis
  • Chris Venable, from St. Charles

These sophomores-to-be will join 13 upperclassmen on our residential staff.

We are in the process of hiring student orientation leaders for Fall 2010. We have 63 applicants for these coveted leadership positions. At least a dozen of the applicants are currently first-year students.

It is great to see our first-year students getting involved in campus life.

Basketball Gorloks Enter Postseason Competition
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams qualified for the SLIAC Conference postseason tournament by finishing 4th and 2nd respectively in the regular season conference standings. First-year students played key roles for both teams. For the men, Cody Bradfisch contributed 7 points and 3 rebounds in the win over Fontbonne that clinched the tournament spot for the Gorloks. For the women’s team, first-year students Maggie Zehner, Catherine Russell, Airyn Miller, Jaime Gaal, and Luree Furr all helped the Gorloks make major improvements this year, going from 11-14 and a 6th place finish in the SLIAC in 2008-09 to a 17-8 record and a 2nd place finish in the SLIAC this year.

We hope to have another newsletter out to you in April. Please send us your suggestions for future articles.

Go Gorloks!

Sincerely,

Ted Hoef, Ph.D.
Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
