STUDENT PROFILE
Joaquin Groves
Nationality: Honduran/Costa-Rican
Major: Political Science

Staying Connected (SC): Any advice for parents?
Joaquin Groves (JG): If you send your kid to college, give him or her the freedom they need. My parents were not calling me to see if I did my homework, they trust me and know that I do what I have to do.

SC: Any advice for freshmen?
JG: Come open minded and ready to face different situations, which you may not be used to.

SC: What has been your best on campus experience?
JG: It has probably been getting to know people from different parts of the world. Webster University has a pretty international community, which opens your eyes to different cultures and beliefs.

SC: What has been your worst on campus experience?
JG: I may not write of a bad experience for I have not had one to this point,

SC: Is your current workload with classes more or less than you thought it would be?
JG: I am taking eighteen credits this semester, so I am pretty busy, but that’s how I expected it to be.

SC: What do your weekends usually consist of doing?
JG: School stuff (studying, writing papers, homework), spending time with my friends.

SC: What do you miss most about high school and/or living at home?
JG: Coming from a Latin American country (Honduras) I was used to having a maid, whom did the house chores. I miss the fact that If I do not clean my room no one is going to clean for it me.

SC: Do you have an on campus job? If so, where/how many hours a week?
JG: I do, I am currently working in the Literacy Corps. Is a work study job, which is considered on campus, but it is actually off campus. I am currently working 3 hours a week.

SC: Favorite aspects of on campus life?
JG: As I said before the fact that Webster is an international campus. Another aspect that I really like is the mentality of people, everyone I have met is really opened minded and respectful of different cultures and beliefs.

SC: What’s on your desk right now?
JG: I am currently taking 18 credits Work study, currently 3 hrs, but intend to work more after spring break I obtained the RA position, this will start next semester RHA representative of West Hall 2 North Secretary of Latin American Student Organization (LASO)

Staying Connected (SC): Any advice for parents?
Carolina Duenas (CD): To support your kids in this time of your life that is very difficult already. As an international student it is hard to leave your home, family, friends, and culture. Parent should be strong and not show weakness when the students leave.

SC: Any advice for freshmen?
CD: My advice is to go to the gym for the first three months because you gain a lot of weight at the beginning. This is will also help you stay healthy and de-stress.

SC: What has been your best on campus experience?
CD: The best experience is to meet a lot of people and become friends because you can learn a lot of things because Webster University is diverse.

SC: What has been your worst on campus experience?
CD: My worst on-campus experience is food because I am used to eating fresh food, not junk food.

SC: Is your current workload with classes more or less than you thought it would be?
CD: In the first semester it was not hard because I only had 15 credits, but in the second semester I had 18 credits, including four night classes, which means I have more homework.

SC: What do your weekends usually consist of doing?
CD: I go to the mall, go to parties, meet new friends, and do homework

SC: What do you miss most about high school and/or living at home?
CD: I miss the close relationship I had with instructors at school

SC: Do you have an on campus job? If so, where/how many hours a week?
CD: Yes, I work at DTS for 15 to 17 hours a week, depending on how busy I am with classes.

SC: Favorite aspects of on campus life?
CD: To make friends and at the same time learn about different cultures. I believe it makes you grow up and appreciate everything that your parents have done for you.

SC: What’s on your desk right now?
CD: Well, on my desk there is a photo album, I have my computer, my lamp, my planner, also I have a campus activities calendar, and another weekly calendar where I write important things that I have to do, such as homework and exams.
