From the Dean of Students' Desk

Welcome to the third issue of the 2006-07 academic year for Staying Connected, a newsletter for parents of first-year students. We hope you’ll enjoy the informative articles, some of which have been written by students and staff members and some which were prepared for Webster by PaperClip Communications.

If your son or daughter has not talked about their plans for housing during the next academic year, please have a conversation with them about this.

All current campus residents were sent a form when they returned for Spring semester indicating a sign up time that will occur the week of February 12th . At their allotted sign up time, they will be able to choose with whom and where they want to live next year. In addition, they will sign their new contract/lease at that time securing the space for the following year. You can find more information including room layouts and dimensions online at www.webster.edu/housing. Below you will find projected rate information for next year.

Since they will be able to sign up with their friends at this time, students should start having conversations very soon about who they want to live with and where. Sophomores have the option of living in East Hall, Loretto Hall, or the Webster Village Apartments.

As a reminder, current first year freshmen from out-of-town (beyond a 35 mile radius of campus) are required to live on campus for two years (freshman and sophomore year). Freshmen from the metro area can choose to stay in campus housing for their sophomore year. Current commuters can also apply to live on campus for their sophomore year.

Research shows that on-campus students have better grades, take more units, and are more likely to persist through to graduation - all national trends that occur with our students at Webster as well. Last year at Webster, 85% of our campus residents returned for their sophomore year compared to 65% of commuter students. If you have any questions about campus housing, please contact Housing and Residential Life at housing@webster.edu, or 314.246.4663.

We hope to have another newsletter out to you before Spring Break. We’d love to get your suggestions for future articles.

Go Gorloks!

Sincerely,
Ted Hoef, Ph.D.
