Career Planning for Freshmen
It is never too early for your son or
daughter to start thinking about career planning. Most students have
the mindset that they can wait until their last semester of college to
begin thinking about their career development needs. Today’s job
market, however, requires students to obtain career-related experience
while in college. Because of this, it is essential that students start
to plan early.
Even during their first year in college,
students can engage themselves in career-related activities. You should
encourage your son or daughter to consider the following:
- Enroll in core courses and identify academic areas and subjects of interest.
- Participate in activities and join a student organization of interest. Visit the
“Student Life & Services” website, http://www.webster.edu/students/
for information about activities and organizations.
- Utilize resources in the library to explore career information. For example, The
Occupational Outlook Handbook (http://www.bls.gov/oco/home.htm)
provides information about job tasks, educational requirements for occupations, average salaries, etc.
- Work in a part-time or volunteer position to gain career-related skills such as customer
service, communication skills, organizational abilities and teamwork. The Career Services office can assist students
with identifying either on or off-campus opportunities. Students can visit the Career Services website at
http://www.webster.edu/careers/ to obtain additional information.
- Schedule an appointment with someone in the Career Services office to discuss career evaluation and exploration. Students can contact the office at 314.968.6982.
