Welcome to the sixth issue of the 2006-07 academic year for Staying Connected, a newsletter for parents of first-year students.

Tragedy at Northern Illinois University
We were all saddened to learn of the shootings at NIU in February. We pray that we never experience this kind of tragedy at Webster. Please help us remind your sons and daughters that they should sign up for our emergency alert system. See: http://www.webster.edu/technology/websteralerts/

This is a crucial step to make sure that we can communicate with students in a timely way during an emergency. Unfortunately, not many students have signed up.

Students can also sign up for the weather alerts, which can help notify them when we are closed due to weather. We had a snow day on February 1 and the system worked well for those who had signed up for it.

Please know that we continue to educate our students, faculty, and staff to help us identify troubling behavior on the part of students. If a member of our campus community notices odd behavior and lets us know, we can reach out to individuals in need of help.

Registration for Fall
First-year students can begin registering for Fall Semester classes on April 9. All undergraduate registration requires advisor approval. Students must make appointments to discuss their schedule with their advisor well in advance of this very busy time period. All outstanding judicial and financial issues must also be resolved prior to registration.

Student Leaders
I am happy to announce that we have hired a number of students from this year’s freshmen class to serve as Resident Assistants (RAs) next year. This list includes:

  • Donnetta Jenkins, from St. Louis
  • Sam Vest, from Godfrey, Illinois
  • Max Reid, from Hazelwood
  • Susan Reina, from Chesterfield
  • Kelly Diecker from Florissant

These sophomores-to-be will join 17 upperclassmen on our residential staff.

We are in the process of hiring student orientation leaders for Fall 2008. We had over 50 applicants for these coveted leadership positions. Nine members of this year’s freshmen class have been offered positions, including:

  • Stephanie DeHart
  • Nick Dunne
  • Frank Hartfield
  • Danielle Ingenthron
  • Andrew Kohmen
  • Quintenilla Merriweather
  • Cailtin Morse
  • Evan Murray
  • Krystal Waters

It is great to see our first-year students getting involved in campus life.

Student Athletes
Our men’s and women’s basketball teams are in the process of finishing their conference regular seasons by the end of February. Congratulations to both teams for being very competitive in our conference and for doing a good job of being fine representatives of the University. Special congratulations to the men’s team for being regular season champions of the SLIAC. The men’s team has been featured on Channel 5 and in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch a few times in the past month in recognition of their undefeated record in conference play.

The men’s team has included first-year students Robby Meeh, Nick Jones, Scott Restoff, Matt Trippett, Brad Cookson, James Buntyn, and Mark Roettger. The women’s team has included first-year students Katy Meyer, Michelle McQueen, Franee VanGennip, and Rachael Wamser. Katy Meyer has been named SLIAC Player of the Week twice this season.

Fraternity
As you may have heard, Webster’s Student Government Association (SGA) voted 16-5 to recognize a campus chapter of Delta Upsilon. A group of young men, many of them from the freshman class, are attempting to start a fraternity chapter at Webster for the first time in our history. This proposal generated a great deal of conversation around campus. I was very impressed with the group’s proposal and with the thorough process by the SGA leaders deliberated on this issue. Our director of student activities has researched this fraternity and feels that it is the right group for Webster. The fraternity will be held to high standards to ensure that we avoid the negative stereotypes attached to Greek systems at other universities. The next step for the fledgling chapter is to obtain official approval from the Delta Upsilon national office.

Activities
January and February were very active months at Webster with lots of student events and activities. Some highlights included:

  • John Oliver, comedian from the Daily Show, performing to a large crowd in the Loretto Hilton Center on February 18;
  • Chuck D, speaking on race, rap, and reality to a crowd of 400 in the Loretto Hilton Center on February 25;
  • Red Hot Fashion Show on February 7;
  • Spirit night at the basketball games against Fontbonne on February 6, featuring a large, boisterous crowd, including a group of students painted in school colors;
  • Plus performances and exhibits by students in the theatre, music, and art departments, lots of athletic events, and a tournament hosted by the Forensics and Debate Team.

We hope to have another newsletter out to you in April. Please send us your suggestions for future articles.

Go Gorloks!

Sincerely,

Ted Hoef, Ph.D.
