From the Dean of Students
Ted Hoef, Ph.D., Associate Vice President and Dean of Students

Welcome to the second issue of the 2004-05 academic year for Staying Connected , a newsletter for parents of first-year students. We hope you'll enjoy the informative articles which have been written by students and staff members.

So far, this has been a really active year. And new students have been very involved in activities and events. That's great to see. Just last night (September 30) we had over 100 students gather together in Sunnen Lounge to watch the first presidential debate. This event and students' reactions received coverage in the New York Times . I hope even more students come out on Monday, October 4 when we are hosting a debate featuring the candidates for the 3rd U.S. Congressional District seat. This program is being coordinated by Nick McGeehon, a sophomore and founder of the Rock the Vote student organization on campus.

By the time you are reading this newsletter it is going to be getting close to Fall Break. This is a good time to ask your son or daughter how they are doing in their classes. Most professors will provide the first-year students with a mid-term report on how they are doing in their classes.

In addition to this newsletter, you may wish to check out the on-line edition of the student newspaper, The Journal, at http://www.webujournal.com/ .

This Staying Connected e-newsletter is once again coordinated by Kim Alt, a senior advertising/marketing major from Affton. Our web designer is Jared Bridgeman, a junior transfer from Quincy majoring in interactive digital media.

We hope to have another newsletter out to you by the end of Fall semester. We'd love to get your suggestions for future articles.

Sincerely,
Ted Hoef, Ph.D.
Associate Vice President and Dean of Students
