From the Dean of Students' Desk

Welcome to the second issue of the 2006-07 academic year for Staying Connected, a newsletter for parents of first-year students. We hope you’ll enjoy the informative articles, which have been written by students and staff members or were obtained from a national source.

So far, this has been a really active year. And new students have been very involved in activities and events. That’s great to see. On September 1, we had over 200 students gather together on the plaza steps outside Jazzman’s Café to enjoy the First Fridays program featuring student performers. And the Student Government Association has had an unprecedented level of interest and involvement. More new students (9) are running for election to be part of SGA than ever before.

New students have also had a major impact on the sports scene. We are having a very successful fall sports season so far, with men’s and women’s soccer (6 and 8 freshmen respectively), women’s volleyball (5 freshmen), women’s cross country (1 freshman), and men’s golf (2 freshmen) all off to strong beginnings to their seasons.

By the time you are reading this newsletter, your son or daughter will probably be six or seven weeks into their first semester of college. Time sure does go by quickly. Soon, they will be completing midterm exams. And then Fall Break will be right around the corner (October 14-22).

If you are in the area, some of the events of Homecoming might be of interest to you. Homecoming is scheduled for October 5-8 and includes a trivia night, headliner concert, and alumni versus student flag football game. You can find out more about Homecoming at this link:

This Staying Connected e-newsletter is once again coordinated by our web designer Joshua Hirtz, a sophomore from Imperial, Missouri, majoring in computer science.

We hope to have another newsletter out to you in October. We’d love to get your suggestions for future articles.

Sincerely,

Ted Hoef, Ph.D.

Associate Vice President and Dean of Students
