Required Degree Programs

Many undergraduate degree programs at Webster University require or strongly encourage their students to study abroad. Click on the links below to find out more about the degree program and how it incorporates a study abroad experience into its curricula. 

College of Arts & Sciences

Department Degree, Certificate or Minor Description of Requirement
English BA in English (Emphases in Creative Writing; Literature, Society, and Politics; World Drama and Playwriting) Students in the honors program combine their English studies with study abroad and/or study of a foreign language, broadening their scope and deepening their experience.
Religious Studies Certificate in Buddhist Studies Completion of the certificate requires a minimum of eight weeks residence and 9 credit hours of coursework at the Hua Hin/Cha-am campus. The remainder of the 18 credit hours may be completed (in whole or part) at Hua Hin/Cha-am, St. Louis, or any other Webster campus that offers appropriate courses.

International Languages and Cultures (ILC)

Degree, Certificate or Minor Description of Requirement
BA in French The department requires one term (minimum 6-8 weeks) abroad in a country where the target language is spoken or an alternative cultural/linguistic experience approved by the department.
BA in Spanish The department requires one term (minimum 6-8 weeks) abroad in a country where the target language is spoken or an alternative cultural/linguistic experience approved by the department.
BA in German The department requires one term (minimum 6-8 weeks) abroad in a country where the target language is spoken or an alternative cultural/linguistic experience approved by the department.
BA in German Studies At least one term of study at Webster University's campus in Vienna (Students may, with the approval of the program director, also fulfill this requirement at a university in a German-speaking country in Europe that is outside the Webster network).
Certificate in International Studies Study abroad for a minimum of 3 credit hours; In cases where study abroad is not possible, the committee may be petitioned to approve an independent project or practicum in lieu of the study abroad requirement.

 History, Politics, and International Relations

Degree, Certificate or Minor Description of Requirement
BA in International Relations (no emphasis) There is a study residency requirement of at least one term (eight weeks) outside the United States or an international relations practicum in the United States. International students who have lived outside of the country of their home campus are exempt from this requirement. To satisfy the residency, students may study at one of Webster University's international campuses or at an approved alternative location.
BA in International Relations with an emphasis in International Economics (St. Louis or Geneva only) There is a study residency requirement of at least one term (eight weeks) outside the United States or an international relations practicum in the United States. To satisfy the residency, students may study at one of Webster University's international campuses or at an approved alternative location.
BA in International Relations with an emphasis in Migration and Refugee Studies (Geneva only) There is a study residency requirement of at least one term (eight weeks) outside the United States or an international relations practicum in the United States. To satisfy the residency, students may study at one of Webster University's international campuses or at an approved alternative location.
Certificate in Migration and Refugee Studies (Geneva only) Practical experience is an essential part of the certificate program. During one eight-week term, the enrolled students work in a refugee situation in cooperation with one of the several concerned agencies. In addition, students gain practical experience through internships, work or research with both governmental and nongovernmental organizations working with refugees and/or migrants.
Global MA in International Nongovernmental Organizations (GMA) A Global degree includes study at several Webster University campuses in a minimum of three different countries.
Global MA in International Relations Webster University's Global MA in International Relations provides full-time graduate students an opportunity to live, learn, and study at Webster's campuses in Leiden, the Netherlands; London, England; Geneva, Switzerland; Vienna, Austria; and either Bangkok, Thailand; or Beijing, China.

 

Walker School of Business

Department Degree Description of Requirement
Management BA in Management with an emphasis in International Business A study residency of at least one term (eight weeks) outside the United States or an international internship/practicum in the United States is strongly recommended. For the study residency, students may attend one of Webster University's international campuses or an approved alternative location. Students unable to study outside the United States can take an international internship (3 to 6 credit hours) with an approved firm or organization in the United States involved in international activities.
 Business MA in International Business Students are required to meet one of the following criteria:
1. A study-abroad course experience
2. A hybrid course experience
 Business MBA- Global Track 3 hours: to include at least one 3-credit international experience course (either an overseas graduate level course OR an online-hybrid course involving approximately 1 week of international experience and company visits).
 Business MBA with Emphasis in International Business Students are required to meet one of the following criteria:
1. A study-abroad course experience
2. A hybrid course experience

 

School of Communications

Department Degree Description of Requirement
Communications and Journalism BA in Global Journalism The global journalism degree prepares students for careers in national and international reporting, as well as for graduate studies in the foreign service or international business areas. Students in this major will have an educational experience abroad and can be expected to achieve proficiency in another language.
Electronic and Photographic Media BA in Audio Production with an emphasis in International Audio Production Successful completion of an audio international internship is defined as follows:
The internship is completed outside the United States. The internship is in the foreign language in which the student has concentrated (or demonstrated proficiency in.)
The student receives a grade of B or better in the internship (MEDC 4950.).

Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts

Department Degree, Certificate or Minor Description of Requirement
Conservatory of Theatre Arts BA in Directing An understanding of cultural and historical forces that form the background for dramatic literature, culminating in a semester of study in London in their senior year.
Conservatory of Theatre Arts Minor in Theatre  The Conservatory of Theatre Arts strongly encourages students to take advantage of the courses available at our London campus.
 Art Certificate in International Art Studies Students must take at least 6 credit hours at a Webster University campus located in a different country than their home campus.

Center for Interdisciplinary Studies 

Degree, Certificate or Minor Description of Requirement
BA in European Studies At least one term of study at Webster University's campus in London, Leiden, Geneva, or Vienna (Students may, with the approval of the program director, also fulfill this requirement at a university in Europe that is outside the Webster network).
BA in International Studies (Emphasis in: Asia; International Film Studies, Global Journalism, International Media Communications, International Business, International Human Rights, or Latin America) Student must participate in an approved Webster University study abroad experience or in an approved international internship.
Certificate in International Studies  Study abroad for a minimum of 3 credit hours.
Minor in Drama Studies To complete the drama studies minor, students must study at the London campus for at least one semester. The necessary credits for the minor may be taken entirely at the London campus, or may be supplemented with course work from the St. Louis campus.
