This course will survey many of the dominant styles and theories of current art focusing on the Venice Biennale as a “living” lab/museum. Students will become aware of the nature of the “art-world” and the broader context in which recent art is situated. A primary aspect of the course will be an investigation of the role of the international art exhibition in contemporary art, and especially the rise and dominance of the international/independent curator.

Itinerary (subject to change)

07/12- Travel to Venice from St. Louis (or other campus locations)
07/13- Arrive in Venice, have orientation, and visit San Marco
07/14- Lectures/discussion, Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi plus Central Asian Pavilion at Palazzo Malipiero
07/15- Lecture/discussion, Arsenale as first part of official Biennale, and  national pavilions in San Zaccaria
07/16- Lecture and Giardini
07/17- Lecture, exhibitions at the Guggenheim museum, and off-site national exhibitions
07/18- Return flight to St. Louis

*The $2,250 program fee includes airfare from St. Louis to Venice, boat taxi transfers from airport in Venice, 5 nights accommodation in Venice, entry tickets to events, and selected meals.

†Please Note: The deposit will be refunded if there are not enough enrollments and the program is canceled. A deposit is non-refundable after the deadline only if the program has sufficient enrollments and a student withdraws or drops the program.
