Webster Students for Environmental Sustainability
Webster Students for Environmental Sustainability strives to promote environmental awareness and enhance campus sustainability through student action on the Webster campus and in the surrounding communities. We welcome and encourage students from all academic disciplines to participate in a well-rounded organization about the interdisciplinary topic of environmentalism.
WSES's main goal is to educate students at Webster University about global climate change and its effects on the Earth and to motivate them to take action. We are helping to establish the Natural Area (behind the parking garage) as a sanctuary so that it may be enjoyed by students, teachers, the general public, and the wildlife that inhabits it. We would also like to collaborate with other universities on programs focusing on environmental awareness and preservation. WSES would like Webster University to become a leader in sustainability for higher education, setting the bar for other institutions worldwide. We want to see sustainability become a huge part of campus life.
In order to achieve our goals, this year we plan on hosting several educational meetings as we have in the past – such as our “Girls Gone Green” night, a trip to our local recycling plant, and a documentary viewing. A big on-campus event that we are planning for the first time is Camping on the Quad – which will happen at the beginning of September and will include education about current environmental issues and the actions we can take together to address them, as well as bonding activities and a tour of the Natural Area at night. For Webster Works Worldwide in October, we encourage our members to be a part of the Natural Area clean-up project. This year we are continuing our attendance at the bi-annual Missouri Coalition for Climate Justice retreat each semester (a meeting of environmental college student groups from across the state) and aim to send some of our members to the People's Climate March in New York City in September.
