Windows 7 and Infrastructure Enhancements

Project Overview

The objective of the Windows 7 and Infrastructure Enhancement Project is to deliver a consistent and reliable desktop image, involving the replacement of the Windows XP operating system and installment of approved application packages based on business needs. Microsoft has chosen to discontinue support for the XP OS, and did so in April, 2014 thus creating security risks for the University. In order to mitigate this risk, Webster University will upgrade the current operating system to Windows 7 64 bit for all domestic administrative personnel, faculty, staff and extended site labs.

This project will integrate processes and technologies utilized for the migration, where applicable, to enhance operations going forward. PC’s will be joined to the newly deployed Active Directory (a unifying technology for bringing distributed computing environments together for the purpose of sharing resources and information), which will increase security for the University, other users, and the computer. The project team consists of members from each IT division and World Wide Technology, who possess extensive experience and will assist with employing repeatable processes and tools to accelerate the migration.

Over 4000 domestically deployed Windows PCs will be affected by this project. During the migration to Windows 7, over 25% of the XP computers will be replaced, another 25% of the machines will have memory upgraded, 25% will be migrated to Windows 7 on existing hardware and 25% of machines already running Windows 7 will receive updated software.
