Email Forwarding

Students and Adjunct Faculty may forward their Webster email account to ANY valid email address.

The University will send official communications to employees and students via email to their Webster email account with the expectation that such emails will be read by the recipient in a timely fashion.  It is the responsibility of each individual to access this email regardless of whether or not they have a forward set.

IMPORTANT POINTS

  • If someone sets a forward to an invalid address or the email address they use is not able to receive mail then the email will NOT be delivered to that user. Instead it will bounce back to the sender as undeliverable.
  • A copy of forwarded email is not kept on Webster server.
  • Webster does NOT verify that you have entered a valid forwarding address. It is your responsibility to make sure that the address you enter is valid and capable of receiving mail.
  • If you set an email forward and are having trouble receiving emails support personnel will ask you to remove the forward as a first step in troubleshooting.  We are unable to troubleshoot issues you are having with third party email systems such as Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail.
  • When you reply to a message which has been forwarded from your Webster account to another account the reply will come FROM the forwarded address, not your Webster email address.
  • It is important that people email you using @webster.edu. Email sent to @pop.webster.edu, @auden.webster.edu, or anything OTHER than @webster.edu will NOT be forwarded.
  • The Barracuda Spam firewall will still be scanning all messages sent to Webster email address for viruses and spam. If a message is determined to be spam it will be sent to the Barracuda quarantine inbox and not forwarded. If you wish to modify your Barracuda Spam settings, or remove spam filtering from your account, you may go to https://mx1.webster.edu.
  • Service accounts (email for a department, not a person) may NOT be forwarded

Email Scams

Phishing is an attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and other account details by a spammer posing as a legitimate entity, such as a bank, internet service provider or University.

Phishing attempts are often not caught by spam filters because they come from "spoofed" email addresses. When someone spoofs an email address they are essentially forging the "from" address on the email. It may appear to be from support@webster.edu when really it is from a spammer.

There are several ways you can identify phishing attempts.

  • Read the email carefully; many phishing attempts are poorly written, containing poor grammar and spelling mistakes.
  • Look to see if there is a "reply-to" address different from the "from" address.
  • Does the email ask you to send in your username, password, social security number or other private information via email? Legitimate organizations do not ask for these things via email.

Phishing attempts are common, but you can protect yourself.

  • Never send your password via email
  • Never respond to a message that looks suspicious or that you are not positive comes from the organization or person it says its from. Don't even respond to just to ask if it is legitimate.
  • Check http://www.webster.edu/helpdesk/email_scams.shtml for known phishing scams, if your email looks similar DO NOT respond.
  • Do not click on a link in an email from an unknown source!  Your account can be hijacked or you can get a virus on your computer by clicking on a link in an email.  If you are even slightly suspicious of the email, DO NOT click on the link.
  • Be skeptical.  Don’t be fooled by personalized messages, web pages or images in an email, they are all easily faked.
