Daily Schedule
Day 1 (August 23rd)
- Introduction to class. Discuss "What is literature?"
- Discuss Chapters 19 and 20: Reading and Writing about Poetry, Chapter 21: Word Choice, Word Order, Tone, Chapter 22: Images, and Chapter 23: Figures of Speech.
Between classes: Participate in online discussions relating to Chapter 24.
Day 2 (August 30th)
- Due: Poetry Explication.
- Discuss Chapter 25: Sounds, Chapter 26: Patterns of Rhythm, and Chapter 27: Poetic Forms
Between classes: Turn in assignment relating to sounds and rhythm.
Day 3 ( September 6th)
- Test 1 (covering Chapters 19-27).
- Due: Response to Sylvia Plath poems.
- View a film on Plath's life and poetry from the PBS Voices and Visions series; write a second response to Plath poems.
- Discuss Chapters 37 and 38, including the one-act play Trifles.
- Discuss topics for Paper 1. Discuss sample paper.
Between classes: Peer response on Paper 1.
Day 4 (September 13th)
- Due: Paper 1.
- Discuss Twelfth Night (possible quiz).
- Watch a film version of Twelfth Night and practice explicating a scene from the play.
Day 5 (September 2)
- Discuss The Glass Menagerie (p. 1326 in your textbook).
- Due: Explication 2 (on one scene from The Glass Menagerie).
- Look at different productions of a scene from The Glass Menagerie.
- Turn in topics for Paper 2.
Between classes: Complete Test 2 (take-home).
Day 6 (September 27)
Between classes: Peer response on Paper 2.
Day 7 (October 4):
- Due: Final draft of Paper 2.
- Discuss Chapter 5: Setting and Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" (p. 309).
- Discuss Chapter 6 and Susan Minot's "Lust" (p. 282).
- Discuss Chapter 7 and Louise Erdrich's "The Red Convertible" (available on electronic reserve).
- Discuss paper topics for Paper 3; we will also discuss how to find secondary sources for your third paper.
Day 8 (October 11)
- Due: Annotation for Paper 3, Explication 3.
- Discuss Chapter 8: Theme and Jhumpa Lahiri's "The Interpreter of Maladies" (available on electronic reserve).
- Discuss Chapter 9: Style, Tone, and Irony, Annie Proulx's "55 Miles to the Gas Pump" (p. 544), and Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants" (available on electronic reserve).
- View a film version of "Hills Like White Elephants" and write a response to it.
By 5:30 pm October 18th: Turn in final draft of Paper 3.
