Judge Keep found that Welles's use of the words "playboy" and "playmate" in the text portion of her site and in her meta tags -- hidden labels in a Web page that can include keywords to help draw the attention of Internet search engines -- were a "fair use" of Playboy's trademarks because they fairly described and identified her achievements.

Officials of 7 Large Universities Complain to PeopleSoft About Its Programs By WENDY R. LEIBOWITZ
Provosts and vice-presidents of seven of the eight "Big Ten" universities that use PeopleSoft software on their campuses wrote a joint letter to the company last month, complaining that the "performance of the systems, in terms of responsiveness, is simply unacceptable." The three-page, single-spaced letter outlines the institutions' problems with the software program and suggests solutions, but also emphasizes their commitment to the company's products.

3Com Awarded U.S. Patent No. 6,000,000 It has taken a relatively short eight-year period to issue the patents No. 5,000,000 through No. 5,999,999. The five-millionth patent was issued in 1991 to the University of Miami, while the four-millionth patent was issued approximately twenty-five years prior to that.

AOL REPORTS 20 MILLION MEMBERS

America Online said its core service membership surpassed 20 million. Over the past two years, the company has added 10 million subscribers to the AOL service. In a new push to attract users as the current market reaches its limit, AOL has formed an alliance with retailer Wal-Mart to attract new customers.
