Join us for a very special evening with the remarkable Julie Duane, who, in a cabaret type setting, will be performing a selection of her poems and playing and singing some of her favorite songs. She promises a sing-along at the end of the planned program. Proudly presented by the Dogtown Historical Society on Sunday, September 21, 2003 at 7:00 pm in the St. James School Cafeteria, 1360 Tamm Ave.
A poet lives in Dogtown! But her talents do not stop there. The delightful Julie Duane, 83, has been a much sought after professional musician for the past 65 years. She played piano and keyboard with bands in the Detroit, Mami, and St. Louis areas. Water color painting is another hobby of hers, and she loves boats and airplanes.
As a child Julie sang in the church choir, and loved singing and harmonizing so much she started her own teenage quartet with her sister, Edith and two friends. After winning a local contest, the group was hired to sing for local political events in the area. Julie's musical career was on its way. She discovered that she could play the piano by sitting down and playing one at a neighbor's house. Lessons were then arranged for Julie by her mother so she could learn to read music.
After high school, Julie traveled to Detroit to visit an aunt. While there, she auditioned for the aunt's neighbor, who happened to be a band leader, and Julie was hired to play keyboard for his band. At 18 she had begun her life as a professional entertainer.
Julie's poems are a reflection of her favorite things and memories of personal events that happened throughout her life. Her poems are filled with sentiment and humor.
Please join us for this very special presentation. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
