Please join us on Sunday, February 20th at 7:00pm at St. James School Cafeteria, 1360 Tamm Avenue, for this very special presentation sponsored by the Dogtown Historical Society. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
The program will include readings from two historical sources on Dogtown (with small bits of commentary added) Bob Corbett will do the readings and commentary.
The first half of the evening will be readings of Father P. J. O’Connor’s essays on social justice during the Depression. These essays grew out of the shock and dismay he felt at the suffering of his parishioners. The essays are well constructed and heart felt.
The second part of the evening, following the intermission, will be readings from the recently published book “Letters from Dogtown” written by Dogtown resident, Helen Scherzinger. She wrote a long series of letters to her daughter, Alice, working in a war office in Washington D.C during World War II. These letters are profoundly revealing of what life was like in Dogtown during the war, the most intensive and revealing document from that period of Dogtown history.
Bob Corbett retired in 2000 as professor emeritus at Webster University after teaching Philosophy for 30+ years. His family has lived in Dogtown since 1915. Corbett’s work on Dogtown history began seriously in 1998 after returning to live in the family home. One of his greatest contributions is the Dogtown Website that includes, but is certainly not limited to; historical writings, maps, Federal census, School and church publications, photos, and century homes, etc.
