Dogtown -- Laclede Plant at Hampton
This photograph is taken from: A HISTORY OF THE FIREBRICK REFRACTORIES INDUSTRY IN MISSOURI. By Clarence N. Roberts. From the Bulletin of University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, MO. June 1950.
I have a few questions about this photo. I presume this is from a bit earlier than 1950. I have blown up the photo until it is quite blurry, but the cars on Hampton seem of the 1930s vintage, sort of big, boxy and black.
Some of my questions are: Just east of Hampton on the south side of Manchester, is that building right on Manchester the old hotel or is that the station house that was there? Anyone know or remember than building?
Secondly, from the back of that building (west side) there is a street which I take it is Sulphur. Okay, follow it across the river Des Peres (that bridge is still there) and there on the southwest corner of the bridge is another sizeable building, looks brick. Do you think that is a brick factory building or could it be the old Sulphur Springs Hotel?
Another question: On the east end of the brick factory property is a street. Which street is that? January?
More: on the westside of Hampton is the Knox crossing, with a bridge over the River des Peres. Today that's all filled in -- no, there's still a bridge there. At any rate, when one crossed that bridge, then on the southeast side is a little building. Anyone have any idea what that was?
Lastly: General question. I keep reading in these brick history books about the "Howard" station, which must have been east of Mackland on the Evens and Howard property. Is that a totally different station than the Cheltenham one, which is what i think is pictured on this map.
Please help with any data you can give about this map, and related issues.
Thanks, Bob
