"AN OUTSTANDING SOCCER FAMILY"

"Much has been said about the soccer families of the Professional, Senior and Muny players, however, soccer has always been popular in "Dog Town" (the immediate area surrounding Clayton and Tamm Avenue) and no game or lineup was complete unless the name of Corbett appeared therein.

"Mr. And Mrs. John Corbett, the deceased parents of the soccer playing Corbetts, were very ardent soccer followers. Mr. Corbett was well-known among soccer followers in St. Louis for many years and could be found any Sunday during the season rooting for one or more of his five sons who were playing.

"John R. (Red) Corbett was a member of the Macks Sandwich Shop Champions he season of 1931-32.

"William (Bill)_Corbett was a member of the U.S.S.F.A. Champion Stix-Baer-Fuller team the season of 1932-33 and 1933-34.

"Charles (Rooster) Corbett was also a member of the Macks Sandwich Shop and other championship teams. He was in several invasions in the South Pacific as a member of the Sea-Bees.

"Edward (Spider) Corbett, a Staff Sergeant in the Army, was stationed somewhere in the China-Burma-India-Theater. He was a member of Phil Kavanaugh's team in the professional league.

"Last but not least, and probably the best known among present day fans, is Bob Corbett as a member of the National Slugs Club and voted the most valuable player in the Muny the season of 1944 as a member of the Championship El Rey Club.

"At one time all the Corbett boys played on the Sunshine Laundry Team (Forest Park Division). [Editor's note: this was in neither of the teams pictured here -- one above and one below. In these two Bob is just out of grade school and only 14 or 15 years old. Ed (Spider) was still only 11 or 12 years old.] The season of 1932-33, the Sunshine Laundry lost in the semi-final replay game for the Municipal Championship by the score of 3 to 2 to the German Sport Club of Carondelet Park, grounds #1. The first game ended in a 2 to 2 tie, Sunday February 26, 1933 and lost the replay game 3 to 2, Sunday March 5, 1933. Both games were played at Fairgrounds Park Grounds # 2. Referee: R. J. Wall. 45 minute halves. Field in A-1 condition. Sidelinesmen: L. Robbins and D. Barnard. Goal Linesmaen: N. Reidy and W. Brady. Attendance: 9000. Admission Free.

"P.S. The German Sports Club made two mistakes and each resulted in a goal for the Sunshine Laundry. J. Bochnicek and Heindel, both fullbacks of the Germans, in trying to clear put the ball in their own goal. Player Joe Phelan of Sunshine Laundry missed on a penalty kick."
