Franciscus, J. A. (1980). HAITI VOODOO KINGDOM TO MODERN RIVIERA . San Juan, Puerto Rico, The Franciscus Family Foundation, Inc. B/W And Color Photos. A curious book! Partly for tourists, partly for art buffs. It carries the bios and sample paintings by over 100 artists, some photos in color, some in black and white, but all very tiny. Additionally it lists the names of other painters as well as short biographies. 4to - over 10 x 12" tall. XII, 278 pp., pictorial wraps; Soft cover. Includes sections on: Arriving in Port-Au-Prince; History of Haiti; Voodoo - Its Origin; Haitian Art; Sightseeing - Things To Do; Architecture; Travel Within Haiti; Personal, Business; Facts and Figures. Illustrated with B&W photos, maps & reproductions, as well as small color reproductions of many paintings. The author (the brother of actor James Franciscus) was a resident of Puerto Rico who assembled one of the largest collections of Haitian Art in the Americas. Very scarce and hard to find.
There is a particularly curious feature of this book. It was BADLY printed and put together. In in the mid-1980 I would see them in Haiti, but often there were badly worn (in such a short time) and falling apart. I finally found ONE that was in just excellent and solid condition. It was going to replace one I had in my early collection that had pages loose and falling out but was fully there. However, I kept the extra copy just
because of how delicate the book was. Now I have both to sell.
- The solid copy tight and very nice. $115.00
- The complete book, but with some loose pages and a bit banged up: $75.00

Poupeye, V. (1998). CARIBBEAN ART . London, Thames and Hudson. Pages: 224, This is the first book to present and discuss the diverse, fascinating and highly accomplished work of Caribbean artists, whether they are indigenous or from the diaspora, whether in popular or "high" culture, rural or urban, politically radical or religious (with associations to Rastafarianism, Vaudou and Santeria). Included are internationally recognized artists such as Wifredo Lam, Ana Mendieta, Herve Telemaque, Sonia Boyce, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and more than one hundred others. A strong link exists between Caribbean art and its popular culture and religion--such as Voodoo, Santaria, and Rastifarianism, as well as the influence of Trinidad carnival and similar traditions. This catalogue has a spot on the front cover where something was stuck on it and when
pulled off the word "Haitian" of the title was strupped off. Similarly on the
back cover, it seems something stuck on it and was torn off which left a large water stain. No relevant data is on the back cover. Enclosed in this 1977 catalogue are sale prices for a 1978 sale!!!! Fascinating.
