BLOOD
New York: Heron Press, Inc., 1930. BLOOD is three short stories, all celebrating blood sacrifice in some form. The first story, Mamaloi, concerns alleged sacrifice of children in Haiti and cites Sir Spencer St. John as an authority. St. Mery is another source. The other two stories are set in Europe, one concerning a pure maiden who kills a white dove, and then an Andulusian tale of a priest who loves blood sacrifice in bull fights, cock fights and finally, human battles to-the-death, the "salsa." The book itself has a
colorful cover, is oversized and with thick pages and some intriguing wood cuts inside.

HISTORY, LITERATURE &C. OF HAYTI
Unsigned article in Niles' Weekly Register, Baltimore, MD, 1820. This 187 year old newspaper which I have in my library has a rather ironic set of stories. Early in the paper is a story entitled: HISTORY, LITRATURE, &c. OF HAYTI. This long story was reprinted from "The British Review from March 1820." The irony is that this story celebrates the rule of both Christophe in the north and Boyer in the south and shows what a marvelous job each is doing and how, while technically at war, they do a decent job of getting along. Then, later in the paper is a another significant report of the uprising against Christophe which began at St. Marc and led to his suicide and the unification of Hayti. However, in this story, just pages later in the same newspaper, Christophe has become this horrible tyrrant and murderer. The issue isn't so much which picture of Christophe is the correct one. Rather, it is the irony that the editors of the Baltimore paper, Niles' Weekly Reader, either didn't notice the contradictory portraits of Christophe or they didn't care. No matter the editorical position, or lack of same, this is an extradinarily vivid picture of the Haiti in the last days of the division into the Kindom of the north and the Republic of the south. It is a bit skimpy in details of the revolution and downfall of of Christophe.

Total of 20 photos in the two essays, some of them in color, but
not normal color photos, but those earlier painted-looking
photos. Some really nice, as one expects from National Geo.
The whole magazine, which also includes some second world war
stories and a popular one on working dogs.

- Niles, Blair.
BLACK HAITI.
1926 edition of this report from Haiti by an American living there during the occupation. 325 pages and photos. Hardbound edition is good condition.
From my own notes on this book: Written in 1925 during the Occupation. Sort of a touristy book, but well written and sympathetic to Haitians, opposed to both the Occupation and Monroe Doctrine in The Americas. Niles is a world traveller
who knows how to get around. Sensitive and observative.

- Osterhout, Major G.H., Jr.
A LITTLE-KNOWN MARVEL OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE.
1920 National Geographic feature on the Citadel
including 12 b/w photos. Text is a history of the citadel and quite
detailed.
Also in this edition: Sir Harry Johnston. HAITI THE HOME OF TWIN
REPUBLICS. And HAITI AND ITS REGENERATION BY THE UNITED STATES.
These two essays by the famous travel writer are, in part, a
justification of the American Occupation, but also a documenting
of it. His two essays are accompanied by 21 b/w photos, many of
them of the occupation troops and troop activities.
This is the entire December edition of 1920, complete and in good
shape. The spine is a bit tattered, but otherwise quite nice. Since
this issue has a very famous story on the art of falconry, it is an
especially hard to find edition since falconry fanciers have gotten
all the copies!
- Paquin, Lyonel. THE HAITIANS: CLASS AND COLOR POLITICS.
This has always been one of my favorite histories of Haiti. Admittedly Paquin writes in exile from
New York, sort of using this book as a platform to become next emperor of Haiti, but
he deals in a fascinating way with the class and color issue. Also, his was one of the
first full lists of presidents, their turms of office and manner of going out of office
which I had seen. This used to be for sale EVERYWHERE in Haiti, and each visit I'd
bring back 10-15 copies and sell them quickly. Now it has become very scarce and I haven't
seen one for sale in Haiti in more than 10 years. It was published in 1983.
I've never seen a hard bound of this one, it's a bright yellow paper back.

VOODOO DREAMS: A NOVEL OF MARIE LAUVEAU.
Picador, 1995. Paperback. Very nice condition. 433 pages. New Orleans in the mid-nineteenth century is a city overflowing with white aristos, black creoles, and African slaves, a city that pulses with crowds, with commerce, and with the power and spectacle of the voodoo religion. At the center of the ritual is Marie Laveau, the notorious voodooienne, worshipped and feared by blacks and whites alike. Marie's followers claimed that she walked on water and sucked poison from a snake's jowls, that she raised the dead and murdered two men. Voodoo Dreams is the spellbinding story of the woman behind the legend. Raised by her Grandmere in the Louisiana bayou, Marie ventures to New Orleans and begins a journey of self-discovery, hoping to find her lost Maman and understand the visions that haunt her dreams. Instead, she runs headlong into the brutality of slavery and oppression, and into the arms of John, the voodoo doctor who promises to teach her what Grandmere will not. As she falls under his spell, John sweeps Marie into a world of voodoo ceremonies, of drama and manipulation, and of sometimes terrifying power. A mesmerizing combination of history and storytelling, Voodoo Dreams marks the debut of an important new voice in fiction.

THE BLACK NAPOLEON
Harcourt Brace, New York, 1931, stated first edition. Book is in very good condition, in the original dust jacket which is good condition with some tearing,
nicks and pieces on the bottom and top of the spine and edges. Otherwise a very
lovely copy of this 1931 book. One of the best books on Toussaint Louverture in English.
