- # 342z Adams, Henry A HENRY ADAMS READER Garden City, New York: Doubleday and Company, 1958. In this reader there is material from Adams on Toussaint, and it seems to support the "plot theory," that is, that the rich planters encouraged the slaves to revolt in order to necessitate French involvement which they saw in their interest. There had
been other slave revolts, and the plan was then to "easily" put down the revolt. So, at least, goes the theory. Hard bound book in dust jacket, 292 pages in good condition.

- # Rare 32 Cory, Charles B. THE BIRDS OF HAITI AND SAN DOMINGO Boston: Estes & Lauriat, 1884 and 1885.
When I made up the list about my rare books, there was one set I just didn’t quite know what to make of. It had some strange features, so I set it aside. Well, everything got CRAZY busy and yesterday I was getting a book off the shelf that someone had purchased, and it was where this item is. So I sat down and worked with it.
I think it is some very special, one of the most exceptional items in my library.
It is four volumes. Each is 11.5 “ tall and 9.75 “ wide.
Each volume has text about birds, and then in the back, on heavy card board type paper, but loose, are magnificent full-page drawings of birds. In sum there are in the four volumes 22 drawings. Almost all have a single bird, but in one or two of the pages of Vol. IV there are just heads of about a dozen birds on the page. There’s one or two of those pages.
Now where it gets interesting is this:
The covers are soft grey with black and grey print. Picture of some birds, palm leaves, and fancy print: The Birds of Haiti and San Domingo.
Then it says (and this is printed by the publisher)
Published for the Author
Then the publisher's name
Then under that in large letter’s AUTHOR’S COPY.
Not written or stamped, but actually printed on the cover by the publisher.
Next I thought I had a flawed copy. I opened volume 1 and it was at page 32 I was so disappointed, but the book look PERFECT. Nonetheless it was page 32.
Most of the pages are uncut at the top, but not the sides, so you can see into them and read most of the text. I didn’t cut any pages open. In the back are these stunning bird drawings, each on a loose heavy cardboard piece. Full size.
However, another odd thing, bound into EACH of the four separate volumes is an ad for the book, saying there will be 300 copies limited edition and the author will hand color each bird plate.
Volumes 2-3 were like one, the cover again saying it is the author’s copy.
Then in Vol. 4 I was astonished to see, there, bound at the beginning, are the missing 32 pages from Vol. I. An introduction, table of contents and a list of the plates (all of which I have).
But, none of the bird drawings are in color. The author didn’t do this copy, just the other 300 copies. (the bum!)
Now, when I searched about this book I discovered two interesting things.
-- any reference to the books list the publication date as 1885.
Mine have 1884 on the front covers for volumes I – II – III
Only Volume IV has 1885.
-- Secondly, I located two other copies (both with the colored birds) and they are BOUND into one volume. Mine is four separate volumes.
The soft grey covers are a bit banged up on the edges. Vol I has a triangle, looks like cut out of the cover at the lower right corner. 1 inch across the triangle. Otherwise the books are beautiful. The same cover is on all four, only the Part # changes and the date of publication for the first three.
I paid a lot for them and I have to ask $1450 for them.
