ASSIGNMENT: Pick one of the list of "candidates" for the thesis
which Corbett will post by e-mail. Raise some objection or objections to this particular
candidate as a thesis. Show why it is missing something important that must be there, or
show how some word is not as accurate as it might be, or some other suggestion for
improving the thesis while keeping as much of it as possible.
PRE-WRITING TASKS:
Read all of the student proposal for the thesis.
Reflect on the and figure which ones are strong candidates, which are very weak,
which are basically the same except for some wording.
Try to focus in on one thesis statement which you think you can make intelligent
and defensible claims showing its weakness and possible mode of improving

Is the student's thesis clear and 15 words or fewer?
Is the set of reasons in defense of the criticism persuasive?
Is the paper clear and in standard English?
THE GRADES THEMSELVES:
A grade of A will mean: Strong and successful criticism, treating the
student's work with seriousness and respect.
A grade of B will mean: Clear thesis and argument, and while mainly
successful, the paper leaves the defense of the thesis less than fully defended. Student's work treated
with full respect.
A grade of C will mean: While mainly clear and defended, either the new thesis statement
is not clear or adequate, or the criticism is wanting in some manner. Nonetheless, the student's work is
treated with full respect.
A grade of D will mean: Either the student's work was not treated to full
respect, or the altered thesis statement or arguments for the thesis are noticeably weak.
A grade of F may mean anyone of three things:
Not turned in at all.
Not turned in on time.
Significant failures to meet the assignment at the level of reasonable university
level expectations of thought, attention to detail, attention to reading or expression. (specifics will be pointed out).
NO ASSIGNMENT MAY BE REWRITTEN FOR HIGHER CREDIT.  You are welcome to rewrite them to improve them, and I will happily comment on them. But the original grade will remain as it was on the first and only graded attempt.
