Your assignment this week is to log onto the Webster University Online Library service. This site is known by several names -- EDEN or PASSPORTS. This service integrates online databases, Internet resources, and library services to facilitate your research efforts. It is accessible 24 hours a day. PASSPORTS is the name of the Eden-Webster University Online Library. You will be asked for a passport number. This is the 7-digit Webster ID number which can be found on personal communication from the University. You'll find it on any billing documents you've received from the school. If you can't find your ID number, call Webster's Scott office at (618) 746-4747. The main purpose of this exercise is to make you familiar with the wealth of information that is available to you online. In some of your other Webster classes, you will be expected to write research papers on a variety of topics. Fortunately for you, that is not a requirement in this class. But as preparation for your other classes, I (and the "powers on high" at Webster) want you to know how to access this resource. As you will see when you get to the PASSPORT home page, you can access Internet resources by subject, Libraries Worldwide, Special Collections & Archives, Online Databases, Business Resources, Online Newspapers (including archives), etc. The following steps will show you how to conduct a search. Then answer the questions at the end of this section and e-mail them to me. Make sure that you follow my procedures for submitting homework assignments.
A. How many references were identified from your search?
B. What are the titles and publication dates of the first five articles?
When you are through, go back to the Main Menu and explore another part of the site. You'll not only improve your search skills but you'll also learn more about the resources that are available on-line from the University. Since the Library site is constantly evolving, it may differ slightly from the instructions I cited above. (If Webster does make significant changes since I last looked at this site, contact me ASAP. I will then revise the above instructions). |
