WHAT IS AN "EXCUSED" ABSENCE?

EXCUSED means that you have given me documentation to explain your absence (business trips, medical excuses, etc.)

Government employees need to submit official TDY orders. Blanket TDY orders are not acceptable unless they are accompanied by a cover letter (on official stationary) signed by your Supervisor stating the specific dates that your were gone.

If you work for a non-governmental organization, you need to submit a letter on official letterhead and signed by your boss briefly explaining the reason why you missed class (business trip, training, overtime, etc.). It also needs to include the date(s) of the class you missed.

UNEXCUSED means that you were absent and I have not received any paperwork from you that I can submit to the Webster office. Even if you notified me in advance, you will be listed as "Unexcused" until I receive the "official" paperwork.

If you want me to change the classification to "Personal", you must tell me to switch it to that category.

PERSONAL just means that you were absent for reasons that do not need to be documented. You are entitled to just one "Get Out of Class Free" card per semester. Your second (or subsequent) "Personal" absences will be classified as Unexcused.
