Welcome to the beginning of your
ITM
5000 course.
Each
week's assignment will be found on this Web site. So even if you miss class you will have
the ability to keep up with the weekly class topics, homework assignments, and other
relevant material. Pay attention to the date at the top of each page. If you get too far
ahead, you may miss some last minute changes that I may post. It won't happen often, but I
just want to let you know that it could happen.
Click on the button corresponding to the weekly
assignment you are interested in and the hyperlink will load the page containing
information about that week's chapters, the "hands on" assignment (if any), and
any Internet assignment.
I have added a feature called
Review
Topics. These are the items in each chapter that I think are
most important and the ones that we will discuss in class. You should
download and print out each list and use them to prepare for each class.
If LECTURE appears in the right hand column, the answer is either not in
the text or I will present my views during the lecture. So you can skip
these questions. If you jot down your own answers prior to class, you will
not have to do a lot of writing during class. Due to the volume of
material that we have to cover in each class, I tend to move at a fairly
rapid pace. Pre-class preparation is essential.
For those of you who already possess some familiarity
with computers, these first few weeks will be relatively easy for you. They are not very
technically challenging. However, they do establish a managerial (philosophical) framework
for employing computer technology.
Test 1 will be relatively easy since it contains
basic jargon and concepts. However, do not be deceived into thinking that all of the tests
will be this easy. They do get progressively tougher!
Non-ITM students who are taking this course as an
elective should not worry, though. Many of the students who preceded you have gotten an
"A" in this course. You do not need to be a "techie" to succeed.
Whether you're a ITM
major or not, the rules for
surviving ITM 5000 are fairly easy:
- Read the chapters prior to class.
- Take notes in
class. Pay particular attention to the things I tell you that
"you need to know".
- Participate in the classroom discussions.
- Use the review questions at the
end of each chapter to test your knowledge of the chapter material.
- Turn in all homework assignments
on time.
- If you don't understand something ... ask.
- If you run across topics that are hard
to remember, try using flash cards for review. Cut a 3X5 index card in
half so it measure 2-1/2X3 inches. Write a question or acronym on one
side and the answer on the other. You can carry them almost anywhere
so you can review them at work, while you are stuck in traffic, or
while you are even watching TV.
