Congratulations!
You're just one test away from fulfilling the requirements for the " I SURVIVED ITM 5000 " T-shirts.
As I told you in the first class
session ... this was going to be a very information intensive class. And it was. We
covered a lot of material. But you're a survivor. And you lived to tell about it!
If you didn't know much about
computers to start with, you have probably learned a lot more than you had bargained for.
A few of you may have decided that this technical stuff is not for you. Either way, you
now know what's ahead of you in the ITM program. That's one of the reasons for
introductory courses such as this one.
If you had trouble with the technical
aspects of this course, keep in mind that other ITM courses will be much more technical
than this one. We only scratched the surface in each of the topics we covered. That's
because this course is only intended to give you an overview of the world of computers and
information technology.
If you like what you saw, then you
should pursue the remainder of the courses in the COMP
program. If you had trouble, then
you will have to be willing to work hard in the other courses and put in a lot of time
studying. Or you might want to review your decision to pursue the COMP
degree. Perhaps you
might find one of the other degree programs that Webster offers more compatible with your
skills and time.
For those of you who had some limited
knowledge of computers, I hope that you now have a broader (and better) idea of what
computer and information technology is all about. There were a lot of terms to learn. No
doubt about it. But that is true of any "introductory" course. It can't be
avoided. You have to learn a lot of new terminology and you have to know what all of those
acronyms mean. All of your efforts will eventually pay off as you take each of the other
courses in the curriculum. (Trust me!).
For those of you who had a prior
background in computers, this course should have been relatively easy for you. Most of it
should have been a review. Some of you may be experts in a particular aspect of computer
technology. But in other areas, you may not be as equally adept and skillful.
Hopefully,
the one thing that you have realized from this class is that many of your classmates may
not be as knowledgeable as you in many ways. Then again they might be better than you in
some areas. Keep this in mind as you work on future projects. Design new computer systems
for "real people" with varying degrees of expertise. Just because you received
an "A" from this class doesn't mean that you know everything about everything.
Your future ITM courses won't be as easy. While you didn't have to struggle through the
material, a lot of your classmates did. (Just ask them!).
Whether you are a COMP
major or not, I
enjoyed having you in the class. I wish you good luck with your future courses and your
careers (whether they are technology-related or not). Before you know it, it'll be time
for your Webster graduation party. (Bet you can't wait!).
