Bookmark file:

When Netscape 3.x or 4.x is started, it will utilize last bookmark file that was used. In most cases, this is the default bookmark file for the machine > (c:\program files\netscape\navigator\bookmark.htm).

The image below shows Netscape using the default bookmark file for the machine that is being used.
No action is required to choose this "default" bookmark file; it is chosen automatically.

Creation of initial bookmark file on disk:
Note: If you do not have a bookmark file on your floppy disk, follow these instructions to create
         your "initial" file:

This will create your initial bookmark file. You should only have to do this once.
Now continue with these instructions to utilize that file.

Use of bookmark file from disk:  (This is starting point, once initial bookmark file has been
                                                created)

Throughout this course, we would like to use our own bookmark file, which is saved on a diskette
that we carry with us. So, we must "tell" the browser to use our bookmark file.

Select the Go to Bookmarks option from the Bookmarks menu in Netscape 3.x. or the Edit Bookmarks option in Netscape 4.x.

The "bookmark" window will look something like this:

To open up a new bookmark file and use that bookmark file, select the Open option from the File
menu or in Netscape 4.x select Open Bookmarks File.  These options will allow you to open a different bookmark file and use it in Netscape.

Netscape will now present you with a file dialog box to locate the new bookmark file to use.
This is written under the assumption that your bookmark file is stored on a floppy diskette in the "A"
drive (3 ½ inch drive) on your computer. Be sure that your diskette is in the drive.

Now click on the Look In drop down list and select the 3 ½" Floppy (A:) option from that list.

Click on the file bookmark, so it is highlighted and and press OPEN.

Adding to or editing bookmarks on disk:
Now your browser is using the bookmark file located on your "A" drive. When you add bookmarks,
it will add the bookmarks to the file on the "A" drive. When you edit bookmarks, Netscape will
be editing the bookmark file on the "A" drive.

Netscape will continue to use this file until you select a different file or shut down the browser.

If you close the browser and restart, Netscape will look for the bookmark file in the "A" drive. If
it cannot find it (for example, if the floppy disk is not in the drive), it will use the default bookmark
file for the machine (c:\program files\netscape\navigator\bookmark.htm). You might receive an
error message like this one:

Just press OK to continue and use the default
bookmark file.                                                                             author: John Thompson
