Dr. Margo Thompson
Webster University ~ October-December 2001

Tip of the Week

I know the last week has been stressful for many of you
as you tried to get everything to "work".

The internet is a fascinating entity that can be an incredible resource.

Now the hard stuff is done.             Don't forget to have FUN !!!!!!!!!

News & Announcements:

  • 12/12/01 ~ Congratulations are in order for Anna Bellamy, lucky winner in the drawing for the December 23 Chiefs-Chargers game. She won 2 tickets, 2 Webster hats, 2 Chiefs shirts and 2 Tailgate tickets to 101, The Fox Tent for food & frolic. Webster and The Fox are partners in sponsoring the Chiefs.
  • 12/09/01 ~ Please check your Hotmail for a message or two from me!
  • 12/09/01 ~ As of Friday 12/7/01 we still had no internet access at the University. I know some of you have continued to refine your pages and have posted them from home or work. If you don't have that capability, BE SURE you have continued to work on the content and plan for your site. You can save Word documents on your disk, including the graphics, and paste them into composer at school or save them as html files. to ftp later.
  • 12/05/01 ~ Well so much for hope! Our thanks to DeVry for their hospitality and openness to our use of their computer lab.
  • 12/02/01 ~ I hope we can put the connectivity problems of last week behind us so you can finish and post your pages in class this week.
  • 11/13/01 ~ You can find links to information related to webpage development and sites for graphics and backgrounds in the Requirements/Calendar-Week Four
  • 11/10/01 ~ You may still check previous students websites.
  • 11/03/01 ~ Students have selected their topic for web research and web page design. You can view the preliminary choices on the Students page.
  • 10/28/01~ Instructions on how to set up and use remote bookmarks are available.
  • 10/24/01 ~ The first day of class, every student  opened a HotMail e-mail account and sent the instructor and classmates a message.
Past Tips of the Week:
  1. When sending e-mail - be sure to identify yourself  by completing  the "identity" information in preferences for your mail, using the "signature" card of your mail, or merely signing your name. In this way, your instructor and others will know from whom they have received mail.
  2. Don't know where to start? Maybe try visiting an "internet portal" site. There are several available. Each has different styles and features, but their purpose is the same. They are trying to provide a good starting point for surfing the net - links to news, sports, education, reference material, and everything in-between. Some examples include: Yahoo, Excite, and Infoseek. There are many more as well. Some that are specialized on a general topic area were submitted as Links of The Week and can be found on the Links page.
  3. To save an image or background you like from a page, position your cursor over the area and right click your mouse, choosing "save image as" and or "save background as" and save it here at Webster to your disk in the "a" drive or somewhere on your computer at home - either "a" or "c" drives. When you begin creating your web page, you'll already have something you can use.
  4. If you've forgotten to "add bookmarks" as you work your way into a set of web pages, use your history (usually in the "go" pull-down menu) to bookmark your way back out. Then you will be able to visit again.
  5. If you locate some interesting information or an article at a web site after you have entered a password or ID number, you cannot make  this site directly available to others by providing them the URL link. Instead provide an APA citation of the information so they can find it using their own password or perhaps locate it through other means.
  6. As you are working on your web pages, be sure to check your links to make sure they connect (use Browse Page from File Menu)  before  FTP'ing them to the auden computer server. In addition, be sure to Title your pages (from Format-Page Colors & Properties; General). Record your .html page names and the names of all .gif and .jpg images so they all will be sent and appear where you want them.
  7. As you are working on your web pages, make sure to include an e-mail link so visitors to your site can communicate with you. Also remember to link the individual pages together so one can maneuver easily aroung your site.
