All About
Listservs
From
Margo
"Listserv is a small program that automatically
redistributes e-mail to names on a mailing list.
Users can subscribe to a mailing list by sending
an e-mail note to a mailing list they learn about;
listserv will automatically add the name and
distribute future e-mail postings to every subscriber.
(Requests to subscribe and unsubscribe are sent
to a special address so that all subscribers do
not see these requests.) These programs are also
known as list servers."

"An automatic mailing list server developed by
Eric Thomas for BITNET in 1986. When e-mail
is addressed to a LISTSERV mailing list, it is
automatically broadcast to everyone on the list.
The result is similar to a newsgroup or forum,
except that the messages are transmitted as e-mail
and are therefore available only to individuals
on the list."

Definitions
submitted
1. Listserv is a way to communicate
with other people in a discussion forum on specific areas and
topics of choice.
You can sign up for multiple lists and get information e-mailed to you
on whatever
you're interested
in.
2. I find a listserv is an electronic
mail facility that allows one to participate in electronic discussion
groups and in
this case, on nursing topics.
3. As far as I can tell a listserv
is just a way of communicating about a chosen subject by sending e-mail
messages to a
certain e-mail address
4. LISTSERV is a commercial mailing
list management system that allows you to subscribe to or create,
manage, and control
an electronic mailing list
5. It appears to be a website that
is a human edited directory of a multitude of subjects and websites.
You can even sign
up to be an editor in a subject you are interested in.

Week
One
You can also
display links in table form. Here are a couple of different ways.
As you are
looking around the internet, pay attention to how different websites display
their links to other sites. See what you like. You may want to save,
on your disk, pages that you like, so you can
use those
ideas, later in the course, when you are constructing your WebSite.
Class
One
For
starters, here are a couple of places you might want to visit.
Also,
here are some other links. Check them out!
Now:
Look
at the appearance of the links themselves in both groups above.
Which
is more inviting? Informative?
Which
do you prefer?
E-mail
your instructor with your responses.
Feedback:
Those
of you I heard from were evenly divided in which appearance you liked for
the links. Those who liked the first set said you found them more informative,
interesting, and specific to the material. People liking the second set
found them less intimidating than the string of characters in the first
set, more informative as to the content, and easier to read.
