Nursing Research Literature Review and Presentation

Literature Review: A review of the literature for this class is a systematic search of nursing research articles to find out what is known about a topic.

The Process for group work:

  1. Identification of topic and definition of general problem.
  2. Search for relevant nursing research articles and reports.
  3. Select and critically read the studies. (TAKE NOTES!)
  4. Complete worksheets for each selected research article.
  5. Synthesize and critically analyze the body of research literature.
  6. Form conclusions linked to the topic of the review and identify specific research statement or questions based on a critical review of previous studies.
From the research on the topic student groups will select a minimum of six published nursing research articles or reports. Each student will read, analyze, and take notes, using worksheets provided, on the studies in order to participate in the group's work of synthesizing, analyzing, and forming conclusions about the body of research on the topic. The group, based on this analysis, will identify a minimum of 3 specific researchable questions for further study.

Group members will complete a self and peer evaluation of each member's participation and effort in the work of the group.

Presentation of Findings: All group members must be involved in a formal class presentation of their literature review (45 to 60 minutes to include time for questions). The group will submit a typed bibliography with title page (both in APA format) for the instructor and all class members. The group, with all members participating, will give an oral presentation of their work that will be evaluated in the following areas:

  • Content (50%):
    • Described and defined the research topic
    • Presented the results of their review of research articles and reports in an understandable manner
    • Demonstrated analysis and synthesis of all research reviewed (did not present on article at a time)
    • Identified their conclusions based on review of the literature
    • Identified at least 3 researchable questions for further study
    • Used research terminology accurately
    • Answered questions knowledgeably
  • Organization (30%):
    • Introduced topic/rsearch problem and summarized key points early
    • Developed and clearly stated key ideas
    • Included equal participation by all group members
    • Completed presentation within time limits
    • Distributed correctly formatted title page and bibliography
  • Delivery (20%):
    • Maintained eye contact
    • Used effective movement and gestures
