Critiques
Students
will write critiques of published nursing research studies according to guidelines
published in the text. Complete sentences, correct spelling and grammar
are expected. APA format must be utilized for typed critiques and for any
citations.
Critique
#1: Students will work in groups during class to evaluate
the problem statement/purpose, literature review, theoretical framework,
and research hypotheses/questions for the following nursing research article:
Dracup, K., Moser, D. K.,
McKinley, S., Ball, C., Yamasaki, K., Kim, C. J., Doering, L. V., & Caldwell,
M. A. (2003). An international
perspective on the time to treatment for acute mypcardial infarction,

Edition database. (Accession Number 11694409) Choose the PDF version to
print.
Critique
#2: The student will work individually to continue the critique
process by completing sections on research design to include internal and external
validity, sampling plan, and ethical aspects
for the above article. This critique must be
typed using APA format and submitted on the date indicated in the course calendar
Critique
#3: All steps of the research process are to be evaluated for
an individually selected research study. A clean copy of the research article
must be submitted to the instructor and this critique must be typed. See
course calendar for Due date.
Nursing Research Literature Review and Presentation
Literature Review: A review of the literature for this class
is a systematic search of nursing research articles to find out what is known
about a topic.
The Process for
group work:
- Identification of topic and
definition of general problem.
- Search for relevant nursing
research articles and reports.
- Select and critically read
the studies. (TAKE NOTES!)
- Complete worksheets for each
selected research article.
- Synthesize and critically
analyze the body of research literature.
- Form conclusions linked to
the topic of the review and identify specific research statement
or questions based on a critical review of previous studies.
From the research on the topic student
groups will select a minimum of six published nursing research articles or
reports. Each student will read, analyze, and take notes, using worksheets
provided, on the studies in order to participate in the group's work of synthesizing,
analyzing, and forming conclusions about the body of research on the topic.
The group, based on this analysis, will identify a minimum of 3 specific
researchable questions for further study.
Group members will complete
a self and peer evaluation of each member's participation and effort in the
work of the group.
Presentation of Findings: All group members must be involved in a
formal class presentation of their literature review (45 to 60 minutes to
include time for questions). The group will submit a typed bibliography with
title page (both in APA format) for the instructor and all class members.
The group, with all members participating, will give an oral presentation
of their work that will be evaluated in the following areas:
- Content (50%):
- Described and defined the research
topic
- Presented the results
of their review of research articles and reports in an understandable manner
- Demonstrated analysis
and synthesis of all research reviewed (did not present on article
at a time)
- Identified their conclusions
based on review of the literature
- Identified at least
3 researchable questions for further study
- Used research terminology
accurately
- Answered questions knowledgeably
- Organization (30%):
- Introduced topic/rsearch problem
and summarized key points early
- Developed and clearly stated
key ideas
- Included equal participation
by all group members
- Completed presentation within
time limits
- Distributed correctly formatted
title page and bibliography
- Delivery (20%):
- Maintained eye contact
- Used effective movement and
gestures
- Maintained effective voice
rate, volume and quality
- Used correct grammar and pronunciation
- Were poised and confident
- Type of visual aids used:
overheads, powerpoint, handouts, photographs, videotape, other________
- Presentation methods
