Note that this is just a guide to the major concepts and ideas with which you should be familiar. Any material from readings, discussion, lecture, and film can be on the exam.
You should be able to:
- Describe the political climate in the Ottoman Empire prior to World War I.
- Describe life for the Armenians and other minority groups in the Ottoman Empire prior to World War I.
- Discuss the role of World War I in the development of the Armenian genocide.
- Desribe the stages of genocide organized against the Armenians and the rationale for these steps.
- Apply Woolf and Hulsizer's model of genocide (including such factors as historical cultural preconditions, crisis, authoritarian governments, ideology, social psychological factors, etc) to the Armenian genocide.
- Describe the impact of the Versailles Treaty on the people of Germany and its role in the development of the Holocaust.
- Describe the history of anti-Semitism in Europe in terms of common themes actions and ideas.
- Discuss the early history of eugenics in the United States.
- Discuss the early history of eugenics in Nazi Germany.
- Discuss the purpose and functioning of the T-4 project (the euthanasia project) in Nazi Germany.
- Describe the Holocaust in terms of the number of victims and the various groups singled out by the Nazi's for genocide and/or persecution.
- Describe the role of bystanders during the Holocaust including actions taken or not taken.
- Identify the names of the various concentration and death camps and the number of camps in Nazi Europe.
- Describe the steps on the path to violence in relation to the Holocaust.
- Discuss the various groups that experienced genocide or persecution at the hands of the Nazis.
- Apply Woolf and Hulsizer's model of genocide (including such factors as historical cultural preconditions, crisis, authoritarian governments, ideology, social psychological factors, etc) to the Holocaust.
- Describe the history of Cambodia, the role of political crisis, and the U.S./Vietnam War on the development of genocidal conditions in Cambodia.
- Describe the genocide in Cambodia in terms of the number of victims and the various groups targeted for genocide and/or persecution.
- Describe everyday life conditions in Cambodia during 1975-1979 and the rules imposed by the Khmer Rouge.
- Discuss the current role of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia today.
- Apply Woolf and Hulsizer's model of genocide (including such factors as historical cultural preconditions, crisis, authoritarian governments, ideology, social psychological factors, etc) to the auto-genocide in Cambodia.
