A. Stylistic Points
1. Introduction and Thesis
Does the first paragraph effectively introduce the subject
of the paper?
Is there a thesis? Is the thesis sentence clear and precise?
2. Paragraphs
Does each paragraph have a topic sentence?
Does the substance of the paragraphs correspond to the
topic sentences?
3. Grammar, Syntax, and Language
Do the sentences have proper syntax?
Is the paper generally free of grammatical errors? (Especially:
run-on sentences, sentence fragments?)
Is the language of the paper fresh (free of stale phrases),
lively, and precise?
B. Substantive Points
1. Argument
Is the argument of the paper clear and interesting?
Is the argument persuasive?
2. Evidence
Are the main points supported by evidence?
Is the source of this evidence cited through footnotes
or informal citation?
Does the essay make interesting and accurate use of the
required readings?
