Tiny Violinists

Kindermusik® Family Adventures

June 1 - July 21, 2021 (weekly classes)

Experience enough music, stories, and activities to inspire a lifetime of learning! In Kindermusik camp parents and children will play, learn, sing, dance, create, and share in the fun of making music together as an enthusiastic Kindermusik educator guides the class through each research-proven and giggle-approved activity. 

Suitable for children ages 6 months to 6 years and their caregivers

String Orchestra Camp

June 14 - 18, 2021

Make music with new friends from all over St. Louis! Students will participate daily in full string orchestra rehearsals, sectionals, and master classes/special presentations. Three orchestra levels under the direction of CMS orchestra conductors will musically challenge every student. Student musicians in each orchestra will enjoy an exciting and rigorous experience. 

Suitable for violin, viola, cello, and bass students ages 7-high school

Requirements: At least one year’s experience playing your instrument and reading music (quarter and eighth notes, minimum); consult with your student’s private instructor or school orchestra director to determine readiness for camp. Completion of pre-camp questionnaire needed for placement; questionnaire will be emailed the week of May 15.

Chamber Music Encounter

June 14 - 18, 2021 
1 – 5 p.m.   *Registration closed

Professional chamber musicians and experienced CMS faculty coach trios, quartets, and quintets. Compositions are performed by and written for one player for each part. Guest performers and speakers share their experiences in successful chamber music performance and ensemble development.

Suitable for violin, viola, cello, and piano students through high school BY AUDITION

Space is limited

Requirements: String players need a developed vibrato. Students must be at or beyond the following representative minimum skill levels:

  • Violin: Suzuki Book 4-Vivaldi a minor Concerto
  • Viola: Suzuki Book 4-Seitz Concerto #2, 3rd movement
  • Cello: Suzuki Book 4-Breval Sonata in C Major
  • Piano: Clementi or Kuhlau Sonatinas

Acceptance in the Chamber Music Encounter will be based on audition, instrumentation needs for chamber ensembles (trios, quartets, quintets), and readiness for small ensemble playing.

Auditions:  Video Submissions are due April 9, 2021

Facilitated by Nadine Hur, this program is designed to address flutists individual strengths and challenges. It includes warm-up exercises, tone, intonation and breathing techniques, and work with nationally-renown guest flutists Jeanne Baxtresser and Soo-Kyung Park.

Suitable for flute students entering grades 7-12 in Fall 2021

Requirements: One year playing flute in a school band program or at least one year of private flute instruction.

Work with expert professional musicians in sectionals, ensembles, master classes and special events. Past guests and clinicians include members of the St. Louis Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Funky Butt Brass Band, St. Louis Brass Ensemble, St. Louis Symphony Trombone Quartet, Equinox Chamber Players, and Dawn Weber and The Electro Funk Assembly.

Suitable for band students entering grades 7-12 in Fall 2021
Two band levels offered: High School (9-12) & Middle School (7-8)

Requirements: One full year of participation in a school band program or one year of private instruction.

Auditions (to determine placement): Online video submissions due on Saturday, May 29th.

Location: Webster Groves, CMS Center

Performance: Friday, June 25 at 1:45 p.m.

Summer Composition Intensive

July 5 - 16, 2021
9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (M-F)

Registration Deadline: June 15, 2021

Students in the CMS Composition Intensive will work with St. Louis area composers and musicians, utilize the Webster University Department of Music’s computer lab, and work in peer groups according to experience level, to create an original work that will be be recorded by musicians from Chamber Music St. Louis. 

Suitable for students entering grades 7-12 in Fall 2021

Requirements: All participants must be able to read music and play an instrument or sing. A pre-camp questionnaire to determine experience is mailed the week of June 15th.  Students must attend the full length of the Intensive for their works to be performed and recorded.

Performance of student works:  Friday, July 16 at noon

Special Guest Workshops

Clazz String Intensive

July 7 – 11, 2021
2:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Registration extended to May 31st!

The Clazz String Intensive is designed to introduce classically-trained string players to the art of improvisation through the pedagogical ideals of jazz and musical languages from other cultures. In this workshop, students will be exposed to jazz, blues, bluegrass, Celtic, Indian classical, and more. 

Suitable for beginning to advanced
instrumentalists age 10 and older, with
at least five years of playing experience.
An audition video required for placement in
ensembles and lessons.

Location: Webster Groves, CMS Center

Tuition: $400

Activities
Students will be scheduled in lessons and small combos each day. In the evening there will be masterclasses and jam sessions. The five-day camp will culminate in student solo and combo performances. There will be ample practice time in the morning or to explore St. Louis if you are commuting.

Repertoire
Assignments are based on playing level and prior experience. Tunes for the combos will be emailed to participants in June. All participants are encouraged to learn their parts in advance of the workshop.

MOCM Adult Chamber Music Intensive

June 27 - July 2, 2021 *Registration closed

The MOCM Adult Chamber Music Intensive places adult amateur instrumentalists in chamber ensembles of various sizes and instrumentation to work with faculty player/coaches. The collaborative faculty have included members of the St. Louis and Boston Symphony Orchestras, the Arianna String Quartet, and other St. Louis area performers and teachers.

Suitable for Intermediate and Advanced instrumentalists age 21 or older

Activities
Each ensemble will rehearse online or in person with its coach for a series of sessions over the workshop week, culminating in a performance finale. The Chamber Music Intensive experience also includes events such as group readings, master classes, faculty presentations and concerts, practice and reading sessions, and social events.

Repertoire

Individuals as well as pre-formed groups are encouraged to apply.

Individual participants will be assigned groups and repertoire 6-8 weeks in advance of the workshop. Assignments are based on playing level and prior chamber music experience. Repertoire requests will be granted when possible and ensemble requests are accepted. All participants are encouraged to learn their parts in advance of the workshop
