Summer 2020: Intercultural Communication: Communicating Globally

Program Description
The mental health and school industries are rapidly becoming more and more global in nature. Therefore, the preparation for those training to be educators or mental health practitioners needs to involve an exposure to global issues and communities. Webster graduates need to acquire knowledge of numerous cultures to manage their roles effectively. To help do so, this course includes a short-term study abroad trip to the Webster Athens Campus in Athens, Greece. While in Athens, students will participate in lectures specific to refugees and immigrants in the area, organized school and organization visits, along with several cultural activities and tours.

Program Highlights

  • Learn about the unique aspects of issues that impact refugees and immigrants in an international context
  • Experience first-hand the culture of Greece while being able to apply the intercultural communication concepts learned in class.
  • Develop an awareness of your own cultural identities and an appreciation for others.
  • Be able to recognize cultural variations in communication
    Styles.
  • Examine why and how individuals and families immigrate. Explore factors related to immigrants' stories to understand how people make decisions in response to these conditions.

EPSY 5350: Intercultural Communication: Communicating Globally

Course Description: In order to function effectively in an interdependent world, we need to get along with and understand people vastly different from ourselves. In this course, students explore the values of their own culture, the extend to which thoughts and perceptions are shaped by cultures, and the expression of cultural difference in education and psychology. This course develops skills in self- understanding, listening, effective communication, interviewing, collaboration and consultation. The final project for this course culminates in an interview research study of persons from different cultures. 3 credit hours.
Each week includes the following:

  1. Study of theory and research pertaining to intercultural communication
  2. Participation in experiential learning activities to enhance self-awareness & the understanding of others
  3. Exploration of the values and customs of the cultural groups in the St. Louis area and at other Webster University campuses.

Program Cost
Program Fee: $1,695
What's Included: 7 nights of accommodation (double accommodation), all academic and cultural activities, airport transfers in Athens, Welcome and Farewell Dinner.
What's Not Included: Tuition, application deposit, roundtrip airfare, most meals and personal spending money
Students can request single accommodations for an additional charge of $670.
Study Abroad Fee: $175
Application Deposit: $100
Tuition: Graduate students: pay 2020-2021 per credit hour graduate rate. Undergraduate students: pay the 2020/2021 per credit hour undergraduate rate

Application Process
Application Deadline: March 15th

To apply, follow these steps:
1) Ensure you meet the study abroad eligibility requirements
2) Start an application via the Webster online application system
3) The application will ask you to fill out a number of forms, pay the $100 study abroad fee*, write a brief statement of purpose, and submit a passport-sized photo.

*The $100 application deposit is refundable to if ALL of the following conditions are met:
1) Student attends the program
2) Student completes the pre and post-study abroad surveys
3) Student does not have any outstanding program charges.
