Earn Your BFA in Sound Design From the Sargent Conservatory of Theatre Arts

If you’re looking at colleges for audio production programs, Webster University has the ideal degree for you. As a Sound Design student, you will develop your skills and knowledge in recording, mixing, system design and sound and computer design. During the 102 required credit hours, you will also gain design and conceptual experience in the studio and in actual production work.

All productions are designed by students, with faculty input purely advisory. This allows the students to gain valuable, hands-on production experience, as well as an example for their portfolio.

Students in our Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program enjoy opportunities to work with directors and other theatre industry professionals. Some students also work with our professional theatre partners or other theatre companies in the area.

Another point of distinction for audio production is that our Sound Design students complete additional coursework through Webster’s School of Communications. This allows students to obtain a broader technical education and additional opportunities for their career path.

Gain Intensive, Professional Sound Design Training

Each year of your coursework will include varied and intense collections of studio courses. Opportunities to design sound for professional theatre productions allow you to work on high-impact projects every semester. You may also add an emphasis in other areas of design, tech or stage management. Each semester culminates in a portfolio review, in which you will share your work publicly. In your senior year, you will participate in a New York City showcase to present your portfolio and skills to NYC theatre professionals and potential employers.

Learn Your Craft With Professional Sound Design Faculty And Facilities

Our Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program faculty are working theatre professionals who maintain their careers outside of Webster. They offer their professional theatre experience and expertise to help you develop critical insights into the theatre industry. Your educational experience will include working in a variety of theatre spaces, some of which are shared with the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. The spaces are equipped with leading edge sound technology, including Digico and Yamaha consoles, Meyer speakers and processes and Sennheiser wireless systems.

Become Part of St. Louis’ Vibrant Theatre Scene

The St. Louis area features a thriving professional theatre community. Beyond working with our professional theatre partners, our students enjoy access to additional theatres and professional directors. You can also access a respected history museum, an internationally renowned opera company and orchestra, a vibrant music scene and a number of well-curated art museums.

Be Prepared for The Next Step In Your BFA Degree Journey

Because BFA students actually begin their theatre careers while in school, you will gain professional theatre experience that will set you apart from graduates of other colleges for audio production. Whether the next step along your career path is to seek professional theatre employment or enter a graduate program, you will be prepared for success.

Webster’s Sound Design program has produced graduates who now work on Broadway, in television, on national tours and in regional theatres across the country.
