Freedom of Expression
Webster University’s Mission and Vision are supported by a Statement of Ethics, which notes that “Webster University strives to be a center of academic excellence,” and articulates the following core commitments to the university’s academic mission:
- The opportunity for students to learn and inquire freely.
- The protection of intellectual freedom and the rights of professors to teach.
- The advancement of knowledge through scholarly pursuits and relevant dialogue.
This Statement of Freedom of Expression connects to Webster’s Mission and Vision most closely through this Statement of Ethics. Its purpose is to ensure meaningful opportunities for students to engage with a wide range of ideas so that they may express their own beliefs, debate differences respectfully, and develop informed opinions.
Professors and instructors support students’ academic inquiry and development through diverse course topics, readings, discussions and educational experiences. Webster University supports this work by protecting the intellectual freedom of faculty members in their curriculum development, course content and scholarly pursuits.
Free and open inquiry — including the exploration of ideas with which one agrees and disagrees — is a cornerstone of academic learning and intellectual development. At times, this exploration may involve differing perspectives and strong disagreements; however, through engaged learning and respectful communication supported by free expression, such dialogue contributes to the fulfillment of Webster’s Mission and Vision:
- Webster’s Mission
Webster University nurtures the skills, knowledge and personal growth of our students, cultivating learners who are engaged citizens, ready to create meaningful change in their communities and the world. - Our Vision for Webster University
Webster University empowers our students to become catalysts for change — transforming their own lives while driving progress and inspiring lasting impact in communities worldwide.
In the United States, the concept of “free speech” is often associated with the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The rights and limits of free speech vary across countries, an important consideration for Webster University as a global institution with international campuses and study abroad opportunities.
Webster community members are encouraged to be aware of the local laws governing the countries in which they study, teach or participate in international experiences. Such awareness can help inform decisions regarding freedom of expression.
Webster University remains committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, one of its core institutional values (see Mission and Vision). The University also maintains a nondiscrimination policy that reflects this commitment to fostering an inclusive community.
At times, exercising freedom of expression may cause discomfort for members of our community. Members of the Webster community are therefore encouraged to exercise freedom of expression responsibly and ethically, with respect for the dignity and perspectives of others.
Free speech and freedom of expression are fundamental principles of the University community, but they are not without limits. Expression may fall outside these protections when it involves incitement, defamation, threats, intimidation, harassment or violations of privacy.
Students, faculty and staff should consult applicable local laws and campus policies for more specific guidance regarding topics addressed in this Statement of Freedom of Expression.
