Meet Karen Williams, who earned a Master of Health Administration from Webster in 2021.
What enticed you to choose Webster University for your degree?
I selected Webster University primarily for its convenient location and flexible scheduling options. I recognized my desire to make a significant impact in the healthcare field, and I believed that obtaining a master's degree would enhance my professional opportunities and broaden my career prospects.
What stood out about your studies at Webster?
What particularly stood out during my studies at Webster was the emphasis on developing project management skills. This was invaluable in preparing me for real-world challenges. Additionally, the faculty's accessibility and willingness to provide assistance whenever needed greatly enriched my learning experience and fostered a supportive academic environment.
How did your Webster degree help advance you in your career?
My degree from Webster equipped me with essential leadership skills that have significantly advanced my career and professional goals. Following my time at Webster, I pursued a doctorate in public health at another institution, which I will complete shortly. Currently, I serve as chair of the student section of the American Public Health Association (APHA), where I am gaining valuable experience in the political arena and advocating for public health initiatives.
What is your favorite part about your job?
My favorite aspect of my job is meeting people where they are and encouraging them to get involved. I find it incredibly rewarding to engage with individuals on a personal level and to inspire them to take action and participate in initiatives that promote health and well-being.
What is something valuable you have learned during your career?
One of the most valuable lessons I've learned during my career is the importance of effective communication and active listening. Building strong relationships and fostering collaboration among colleagues and stakeholders are crucial for driving successful outcomes in any project or initiative. Understanding diverse perspectives enhances problem-solving and creates a more inclusive environment, ultimately leading to greater impact in the field.
What advice would you give to others who are considering Webster University for their degree?
I would advise anyone considering Webster University for their degree to take full advantage of the supportive faculty and resources available. Engage actively in your studies and seek out opportunities for collaboration and networking. Additionally, embrace the flexible scheduling options to balance your academic pursuits with personal and professional commitments. Webster provides a strong foundation for growth, so be proactive and make the most of your time there.
What is your favorite spot on your Webster campus? Favorite spot around the University?
My favorite spot on the Webster campus is the library. I have a passion for reading and conducting research, and the library provides the perfect environment for me to delve into my studies and explore new ideas. It’s a space that inspires learning and intellectual growth. Additionally, I appreciate the vibrant areas around the university where students can connect and collaborate, fostering a sense of community.
What has your life journey looked like?
I grew up in the south-end part of Little Rock, Arkansas, and currently reside in Nashville, Tennessee. Throughout my life, I have often identified as the underdog. However, in this season, I feel as though I am being elevated in the presence of those who previously overlooked me. I am emerging as a rising star, dedicated to advocating for and encouraging a movement of individuals seeking positive change.
What was your first job, and what do you remember most about it?
My very first job was at Just for Kids Daycare, where the owner, Tracy Macon, played a pivotal role in my growth. She encouraged me and treated me like family, helping me recognize my potential. Her support and guidance left a lasting impression on me and instilled a strong sense of confidence that I carry with me today.
How do you spend your free time?
In my free time, I enjoy vacationing and exploring new places. Traveling allows me to unwind, experience different cultures and create memorable experiences. Whether it's a weekend getaway or a longer trip, I cherish the opportunity to relax and discover new environments.
Is there anything else you want to share?
I will graduate with my doctorate from Capella University in September 2025. I turned in my manuscript and am looking forward to the phone call that I have finally finished.
