Young Musicians Meet the Composer: Leon Steward's World Premiere at CMS

Leon Steward conducts YPSO

On Sunday, January 18, the Young People's Concert Orchestra (YPCO) of the Community Music School of Webster University (CMS) proudly presented the world premiere of Bedlam in the Badlands, a composition by Texas-based composer Leon Steward. Mr. Steward attended the performance and, in addition to conducting a clinic for the students, provided them with an invaluable opportunity to engage directly with a living composer. This rare experience allowed students to ask questions about Mr. Steward's creative process, learn about the intricacies of composing for orchestra, and gain insights into the realities of pursuing a career in composition. Students were able to witness firsthand the relationship between composer and performer, as well as the challenges and rewards that come with bringing a new work to life. For many, it was a memorable chance to interact with a professional composer, gain advice, and deepen their understanding of both the artistic and practical aspects of music composition.

A dedicated educator for 38 years, Mr. Steward spent his entire teaching career in Texas before retiring in 2019. Over the course of his career, he has composed more than 400 works across a variety of genres, including band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, percussion, and choral music. His compositions reflect the influence of notable figures such as Clifton Williams, Francis McBeth, W.A. Mozart, Don Ellis, and Frank Zappa.

The Young People's Concert Orchestra is a distinguished ensemble within the sequential orchestral program at the Community Music School of Webster University. Composed of more than 80 talented students from across the St. Louis and Metro East regions, the orchestra is selected through an audition process and performs two concerts each academic year. The ensemble’s repertoire spans a wide range of symphonic literature, including traditional classical works, jazz, contemporary pieces, as well as popular and cinematic music.
