Celebrating the Legacy of Harry and Arden Fisher: Founders of the Young Composers Competition
November 25, 2025

The Community Music School of Webster University has nurtured young musicians for decades through programs that foster creativity and artistic expression. Among these, the Young Composers Competition stands out as a pivotal initiative encouraging budding composers to share original works. Established in 2004, the competition owes its inception to Harry and Arden Fisher, whose support for music education has left an indelible mark on the school and countless young artists.
Harry and Arden Fisher were dedicated musicians and passionate advocates for music education. For decades, they contributed time and resources to the school, believing every child deserves the opportunity to experience the joy music brings to life. Their commitment was recognized in 2017 when they received Webster University's Visionary Award.
The competition's genesis traces back to a conversation between the Fishers and Carol Commerford, then director of the school. Their discussions were inspired by Fear No Music, a program that had positively impacted the Fishers' grandson.
With composition teachers' help, the Fishers and Commerford created the competition to empower young composers ages 12 to 21. It comprises two levels, enabling students to submit original compositions performed by Chamber Project Saint Louis.
The competition offers more than a contest; it fosters community and collaboration. Each winner receives a recording and feedback from a guest composer. Commerford explained that they used to provide feedback individually, but when they brought everyone together, winners learned from the feedback on all the pieces, not just their own.
This environment creates lasting friendships, with composers using social media to stay connected. The competition's reputation has grown significantly, attracting submissions from across the United States and internationally from countries like Australia, China, and the United Kingdom.
Though Harry and Arden Fisher are no longer with us, their legacy thrives through the competition and scholarships established in their names. Their commitment has inspired countless students to pursue musical dreams. The competition enriches the school's educational landscape while enhancing Webster University's visibility nationally and internationally.
The Young Composers Competition represents a lasting commitment to fostering creativity, collaboration, and excellence among young musicians. Through the Fishers' vision, it has become a beacon of opportunity for emerging composers.
As the Community Music School celebrates its centennial, the legacy of Harry and Arden Fisher stands as a testament to 100 years of nurturing musical talent. Their contributions represent the spirit of innovation and dedication that has defined the school's century-long commitment to advancing music education.
